maybe i should have added the word primarily in there......

still i've been to concert halls and heard great performances from large groups of diverse individuals sitting in tuxes and evening wear,reading the program from music stands,and low brow punk/metal acts in tees and vulgar tee shirts,as well as everything in between.....

if someone wants to avoid a particular act because of the visuals,cool, but if they miss out on a great performance because of that.....well i'll be inside enjoying the show..i'll tell them about it later

Yeah, but generally the music you go to see has a certain look, no? It all goes hand in hand. I think we all agree that shorts/music stands are all fine within their context.

Top 5 things that I can't stand in live bands

1. Singer has two faces and one interactive gesture that never varies no matter what song is being badly performed

2. Crappy club/dance garbage turned into somewhat rock songs. I can always do without a lady gaga song covered by a four peice band.

3. one dude in drag and the rest of the band wearing jeans and t shirts. Pick a gimmick and go with it

4. Fans blowing your hair around. One thing if your hot on stage, but the posing like a romance novel cover while you wail away just looks ridiculous.

5. Telling me to support your activism. Don't assume that just because I am at your gig I feel that we need to wipe our asses with old shirts to save the spotted snail darter or whatever.

possibly,but the point i'm trying to make is that there are some fine players out there that can barely dress themselves at all,and to miss out for the lack of a "look" would be folly

from the standpoint of a player that believes the "look" will get him access into more venues may be valid,but slightly ot for this thread

Yes we are getting a little off topic.

And there are many great players out there who miss on the look... and the result is they're most-likely not meeting their potential... because bottom line, unless you're simply out there to have fun, it's still a business.

1. Bands that have to tune to drop-D mid set without a stage tuner...Great you can almost tune by ear, we don't want to hear it. It's not professional and there is always one who can't quite get it in tune.

2. Bands that have to tune back up to standard tuning after playing one song in drop-D without a stage tuner... You get where I'm going with this.

Number one thing that bugs me about a band is when one or more members dances in a way that's entirely innapropriate for the genre of music they're playing.

Went to see a blues band in Wisconsin once, really tight players and great sound. But my God, I wish I got a video of this bassist. When I first came in I thought the guy was choking to death on something - his body and head kept lurching violently forward in this sparodic, spastic motion like he was trying to puke something up whilst still playing the bass part. Honest to God, I thought I was going to watch a bass player suffocate to death right on stage in the middle of "Little Wing." I wanted to shout "somebody help that guy!"

When I got closer (and he didn't actually collapse dead), I noticed that he was simply dancing like this.

It was the weirdest thing, like the combination of violent dry heaving and thrash metal headbanging.... to slow blues jams.

Also hate seeing anybody play a gig in really crappy clothes. I won't discount them for being able to play well, but an eyesore is an eyesore everyday of the week. Folks, a little bit of style goes a long way. The nineties are over - you don't need jeans that could fit an elephant's legs. We have pants that actually fit now, mmmkay? ;)
