Just because I'm from Montreal, what makes you think I do ALL my gigs here?

Believe me, I've been in pretty much every situation possible.

How long are your festival sets? Mine range from 60 to 90 minutes. If you play blues and can't put on some nice cotton pants for that short amount of time then that's your choice. When it's 120F out there, you're cooking in shorts anyway... so why not look good?

Not only that, it varies by genre (among other classifications). For some audiences, you're expected to blend in. For others, you're expected to stand out. What stands out for one, might blend in with another.

It might be a fun expercise to "Stereotype the Band" by guessing what sort of music they play based on how they look. Example: If you saw a guy in a suit, fedora, & shades, what sort of music would you expect him to be playing? Where might he be out of place?

A few years ago I was organizing a yearly concert at a bar for a bunch of local musicians. I wasn't playing just organizing it.

Well it turned out for work reasons, one of the bands playing in the middle was going to be a few hours late. He was a paramedic or fireman, I don't remember. So I told the bands we would but have to change the schedule and push that band to the very last. Then one of the bands threw a fit saying that they were suppose to headline and this was total B.S. I got irritated and told them they weren't the Rolling Stones and this wasn't Madison Square Garden. If you are playing a bar or playing to less then 100 people there is never a headliner just someone that's going last.

I didn't have any problems with any of the bands after that.

I gotta disagree with this, I wear a beat up pair of converse on stage. Mind you that kind of goes with our look... plus I'm a teenager... so i can get away with it:D

I agree with everyone that said a band should look presentable to the crowd.

Washing your hair and putting on a pair of pants just shows a amount of respect to the audience that shower shoes and clownish getups just don't do.

I for one think that this is a pretty cool look:



Wait a Minute! is that a blues trio playing a HENDRIX song?

Thanks! I tend to agree with you about other types of music. It's just too late (20yrs) for me to change now!

Do you mean switching out one guitar for another, or a band whose members all play multiple instruments and switch it up? Because I loooooove bands that do that if they do it well! One of my favorite local groups in SC was a 4-piece indie band whose members could all play bass, guitar, drums and keyboard really well, and they made the instrument switching an integral (and interesting) part of their live show.

One of my biggest pet peeves: I once saw a hard rock band whose bass player just stood at the back of the stage, motionless, facing his amp for most of the set. I don't expect every musician to move around a lot, but facing away from the audience is incredibly disrespectful and boring.

I mean a band whose members play multiple instruments. I'm sure there are bands who do it well, the bands I have seen make it look like a cluster****. 2 or 3 minutes of switching guitars, basses, and adjusting straps. They could have played another song in the time it took for them to do that. 2 songs later, they are doing it again.

They are a really good band, all very talented musicians. They have a massive pa, and a massive light show, with people who can make them sound and look good. This is just a part of their show that bothers me.
