"I don't like 'this particular artist'!", but you just clicked on a thread with 'this particular artist' in the thread title to state that, and for what?

Well, if the thread title is open-ended -- like, for example, "What do you think of [this particular artist]?" -- then it's practically by definition a call for divergent opinions. Or, if the thread title is ridiculously hyperbolic -- like, for example "[this particular artist] is more talented than Mozart, Stravinsky, and The Beatles combined!" then it's arguably inviting a different opinion.

For all other scenarios: It's the internet.

Sometimes a contrary opinion is just a contrary opinion and not necessarily thread crashing or hating.

If a thread creator doesn't want to hear from anyone who disagrees with his or her position they should include "Please don't disagree with me. I only want to hear from people who share my opinions on this topic." That way there's no potential for hurt feelings, which is very important for grown ups.
I agree with what you are saying, sometimes it is good to hear the other side. There are also times when it seems like some people are just being contrarian. They might not really care too much about the subject but they just want to be the burr in your sock.
I know me and you have disagreed before (well maybe a little bit. ;)) but I have always felt you believed in what you were saying, others not so much.

What is it that drives people to click on a thread that is a topic they are either not interested in, or they have no input other than negative?

"I don't like 'this particular artist'!", but you just clicked on a thread with 'this particular artist' in the thread title to state that, and for what?

"I would never do THAT!", then refute everyone else who does, in a thread about "why people do THAT".

"You need big iron, all tube all the time!", while calling other amps toys, in a thread about micro-amps.

I HATE threads about topic crashers. I would NEVER post a thread like that. I'm quite upset now.

The first round of forums I frequented on low baud dialup wasn't any different. And i got my first online death threats. Come to think of it I was doing exactly what you are describing in this topic. I pointed to a younger user that the 'vampires' were roll playing and not real - i guess i was the troll going against the topic. They claimed to know my real identity and said they were going to kill me. I don't even think i bothered to report it. I could picture the young users on the other side was just some kid feeling powerful. I just ignored it. And not dead yet.

That's because you're a vampire. You are immortal.
