Double Bass Toronto Bassists: Question on minor repairs

Hi All,

I need to have some pretty routine work done on my bass (bridge fitting, tailgut, etc). Wondering where in Toronto I should take it (I live about an hour and a half outside the city). I’m mostly curious of the work that the Soundpost does. How does it compare to Heinl’s. I would prefer to take my bass to Heinl’s (based off personal experience, and recommendations), but they’re closed on weekends which means a day off work to take the bass in. The Soundpost is open weekends though. How are they with basses, or are they more focused on violins? Any info would be greatly appreciated... would I notice any marked difference in quality of work between the two establishments?

I'm in Kitchener, so I'm in Riedstras territory. I've been advised by a fairly prominent local bassist to take my bass to Toronto for any form of setup. Reidstras is an awesome place, but bass is not their thing.

I'm in Kitchener, so I'm in Riedstras territory. I've been advised by a fairly prominent local bassist to take my bass to Toronto for any form of setup. Reidstras is an awesome place, but bass is not their thing.

Stephen Collins is in Sarnia. A viola player but a good man nonetheless, with a good eye, an open mind and good hand skills.

He installed one of our hand carved tailpieces and a wooden end pin for a player in Windsor and did a nice job.

He’s been doing a great job with re-hairs and repairs on some of my bows.

I'll keep Stephen Collins in mind for the future. There's also a "nameless man" (I know he exists, but haven't gotten his info yet) in Kitchener. He supposedly does amazing bow rehairs.

I've got some time slotted for Tuesday at Heinl's... looking forward to a TO day surrounded by strings

Both have done great work for me. Although, # 2 worked on my cello.

Went to Heinl's today with the bass... Couldn't be happier with the work done. Had a new mid grade bridge with adjusters and new tail gut thrown on... Sounds like a new bass with a fresh set of Evahs on. Also they patched up a seem that was coming unglued (didn't even know it was) and polished the dirty old body and varnished the worn edges. Barely recognize the old girl.
Needless to say I'll be taking any future bass work I need done there.

I just had Johann Lotter do a repair on my Romainain Flatback bass. I emailed him in the morning and he fit us in same day. He is in the south west part of Toronto. I am very pleased.
