Tort guard hate?

Apologies if this has been covered ad naseum here, but I’m new to the fold and lazy about searching, so here goes: why all the tort guard hate? Personally, I’ve always been a huge fan of tort guards; probably my favorite guard option. Am I in the minority? Lay it on me, TalkBass, what say y’all?

I've seen several decent tort pickguards.
Saw a few burst finishes that weren't too bad.
Combining the two, however…sorry, no.

I think you may be perceiving more tort hate than there is - a vocal minority that is mostly backlash from the overwhelming tort love.

I certainly love me some tort.

OP--I was just joking around, because my personal perception of the "TB mass opinion" on tort was precisely the opposite.

I would jokingly (and lovingly) bet if someone put up a general poll of "what color pickguard should I use on this bass?", I'd expect probably an ~80% chance of tort coming out the winner. Give or take ~10% depending on the color of the bass

Tort look great with fiesta red, lake placid blue, Olym white, sunburst ,burgundy mist body, but I never like tort with maple fingerboard.

Hard to see the tort, but it’s there.

Personally I love it! Where I get lost is the mint green stuff, or fiesta red. Yuck.

I do wish there were more variations or colours available, though. Like vintage Formica, for example.

I wouldn't say there is a lot of hate for tort, if anything there is an annoying amount of love for it, which then leads to a backlash.
I generally don't like it because its old and antiquated looking. I can stand it on a black bass, but mostly because there aren't a lot of red pick guards out there. Then some people pair it with colors that are hideous on their own, and call their visual abomination "sweet."
Like I said, it looks old and dated. I wish people would move on from 60 year old designs and come up with something new.

What exactly is "real" tort? Did somebody slaughter a poor defenseless tortoise for it's shell?

I'll honestly admit, I hate tort pguards. There I said it (typed it?). I just don't like brown period.
