Am I just wack or is it possible to get different "shades" of tort?

I've seen some that look very reddish and others that are very dark brownish... or is that just an optical illusion based on what color they're laid over?

No illusion. There is red tortoise and brown tortoise to choose from.

candy apple red is brighter and more red, candy cola is dark brownish red

Ah, pearl blocks. Definitely go white pearloid to match on the pick guard. Sexy.

You can put tortoise on anything and I'll dig it. I've also been warming up to candy apple with mint, it even sounds delicious!

I recently did a Warmoth CAR Jazz and I thought about a guard, but when I got it it looked so good I couldn't cover it up.

My choice would be a dark tort vs pearl if I ever decide to go that way.

Not a fan of CAR/tort. Looks SO much better with mint or white imho.

Mint is my favorite pickguard on CAR and many other Fender custom colors.

I prefer Tort only on Natural and Olympic White.

I gotta say my Candy COLA bass loves the white pearl & I'm not liking these torts at all. On stage I think the white pearl would pop better.
