Reminds me of when I was half my age. I owned a plumbing company up in Lake Arrowhead and was working on this very old house where I had to climb under the house through old fencing that was laying under there and work on their plumbing for eight hours. I made it a habit to never look around in the dark just in case I didn’t like what I see but this one time I decided I’d take a look after the job was done and there were black widows hundreds and hundreds of them in every corner. Anyway they let me do my job all day long without attacking me or biting me and I was lucky I didn’t stick my hand in one of their numerous webs as I was working my way back into the substructure of this old mansion on my stomach.

Y’know...whenever I get tired of our crappy weather here and dream about moving to a more temperate climate - I remind myself that the scariest critters we have up here and black bears and wolves. And they don’t like people so we rarely see them. Mosquitos and black flies are the next worst - more prevalent and annoying rather than dangerous.

Other nasty critters and creepy crawlers that inhabit really nice places like California, no thanks.

I had a smiler experience many moons ago. I was renting a house so old it had an addition on the back where a kitchen and bathroom had been added when the owner first got an electric well and indoor plumbing. It had been remodeled and while it didn’t look like much on the outside, it had been updated on the inside with insulsted walls and ceiling and modern windows and doors.
Anywho, one day the cold water to the bathroom sprung a leak in a pipe under the house so i go under there with my flashlight to see what it’s gonna take to fix it. Turns out the original black iron pipes had seen better days so i worked out a deal with the landlord to replace them all. It was only after i started the job that i discovered the crawl space was over run witb black widows. I stopped work and took a couple days to fumigate that crawl space real good before i went back under there. I’d been under there several times before i discovered all the spiders and have no idea how i didn’t get bit.

After 40ish yrs of reading aloud to children (for a living, and just for the joy of it)...it comes down to Dr. Seuss’ ‘The Sneeches’, and this one...

...just sayin’

As a rule i am. As long as they don’t pose any more threat than a little discomfort it’s all good. The one in the pictures i posted eventually went on it’s way and dissappeared under my bed. But when i’ve got to be thrashing around in the dark and i know it’s loaded with potential death, i tend to be proactive in lowering my probability of dying for the sake of replacing some water pipes. It’s the same with the large velvet tail rattlers who share our hillside, it’s nothing personal and i have plenty of big rat snakes to keep the rat population down to an acceptable level so any rattler that has the bad luck to show up in the cleared area of the yard becomes that nights dinner because i’d much rather eat the snake than take wifey to the ER with a big load of venom in her calf. One of our dogs took a hit to the face from one and i had to put him down and the other recently went to doggie heaven from old age so we are without any organic alarm system at present and the weather is about to wake up all those hungry rattlers so i’m thinking we will soon be having some rattler and sliced tomatos for dinner. If not it will be the first year here without it.

I have another story about yellow jacket wasps the kind that has the two stingers. I got caught in the bushes playing hide and go seek in Oklahoma in the 50s didn’t notice that there was a wasp nest right next to my head and as long as I didn’t freak out no problem soon as I started freaking out they stung me. Another time, up in the mountains, I sat on a stump and it was crawling with the big red ants and was not bitten by the ants or the deer flies I was pretty amazed and they were crawling all over me. Lol! Am I Antman? As a toddler I sat on an anthill and the ants buried their heads in my skin! My Mom told me she couldn’t see the water in the tub because of the layer of ants floating there! Holy Crap, must have been a lot of ants.
