...I think these are wild turkeys. They were timid, kept their distance and an eye on me, but they didn't run away when I rode by...

I'm not so sure. We have something here in Virginia called colloquially "Turkey Buzzards", because they are sometimes mistaken for Turkeys. They are actually a protected bird, quite useful for keeping carion cleaned up, especially this time of year. Those look like black vultures. I'm far from being an expert... though just for self-deprecating fun, we did name our bluegrass/string band "The Luv-Buzzards" ... and you can't believe how many wedding gigs that snagged.
