Compared my big amp to my small one. Shocking.
So, doing a sub gig for a friends band next week, doing the classic rock up to early 00's in a fairly largish room in one of the bigger cities in my area.
Normally I use my TC Electronic BQ-500 and a Hartke 112 monitor cabinet for my standard gigs, but honestly it's a rather "mid-heavy" amp. Does a great job of getting the midrange out, not so much the top or low end. So, I figured this called out for something a bit more "rock" and so I hooked up my old SWR SM-500, and plugged it into my Goliath 3 4x10.
While it sounded great, it's a bit noisy (has been since day one really though to be fair)….and also, it's substantially heavier than my TC.
Well just for fun, I figured maybe I should just give my Trace Elliot a shot - after all, I know it's not loud enough to cover the gig…but I've never ran it into the Goliath so sure let's do it.
Holy hey, talk about an amp slayer. Knocked both out of the park, and even though it's a low wattage amp (it's 200@4, 130@8)….it sure as heck didn't sound that way, with my Fenders, Warwicks or Warmoths.
Guess I'll be asking if I can run a feed to the board, or if not bring one of my powered PA speakers to help it cut through. Impressed.
