TRACE-ELLIOT ELF SCHEMATIC

Hi, in my rush I plugged my trace-elliot elf speaker output into another amp instead of the speaker. I can smell the damaged part!!!
1) Has anyone got a schematic diagram for this amp?
2) Do the knobs actually pull off on this amp----if so they are a tight fit!
3) Anyone else done this and fixed it?

(No clue if it can be repaired, output xformer likely fried, lucky if it's not a lot more.)
 
I think you can safely presume there is no output transformer. If you did indeed operate it into something like a dead short, it seems likely that you have burned up the output module. If this is so, it's replaceable, but probably not by you, and probably not in a way that you will find cost-effective. And schematics for this aren't likely to be in circulation.

Agreed, they are generally too complicated and difficult for a qualified tech to cost effectively troubleshoot. An end user would have better odds buying a hand full of lottery tickets!

Thanks. I knew someone who actually knew what they were talking about would be along shortly. "Magic smoke" is about the extent of my technical depth on electronics. :)
 
Well I've taken it apart, except for getting the knobs off, waiting for an answer from TraceElliot on that one as they appear bonded on (but probably just a real tight fit). It's certainly well made, hoping to get a diagram so I can work out the extent of the damage. Seems easily repairable though....just need the info.

Define easily repairable... do you have a DSO and the understanding/experience working on pulse width modulated systems with global feedback?
 
Exactly! Can't make it worse because it's knackered. Yes I think they probably are but tried gently prising them off and they are stuck fast. Not too much of a problem, just makes one ribbon connector really hard to get apart. I'm an avionics engineer so it's straight forward with the info if only I can get it. Anyway, like you say...can't make it worse!!

There should be no obsolete parts inside this relatively new amp. Knowledge - what's the last class D amplifier you repaired? These new amps are not the common lead sleds that were straightforward to work on that used to be around. Cost/time effective? It's like you'll be at this for long enough that you would have come out on top by just buying a used one.

In any case, if you really want to tinker, please be safe doing it and figure out what not to touch first.
