EDIT - regardless of the date of this thread, YES, I still have this bass and YES it is still available to trade for a more compact CT. If the bass becomes unavailable or traded, I will update this thread to reflect that information

    *** ** * ** ***

    Deep breath...ok...here we go...

Up for TRADE is my beloved one-of-a-kind Carl Thompson with ALL the frills. This puppy is a special beast...stamped with a completion and pick up date on Carl’s Birthday 2/5/10 - I am the only owner of this instrument and have been playing it for the past 8 years. It shows some minimal signs of wear and is not a museum piece, but she's in GREAT shape!

*** If little nicks and scratches from use are a big deal to you, I can do my best to capture every little dot and dash, but she's not beat up by any means, no real damage aside from one small nick in the top of the headstock...but definitely has been played and has some wear here and there.***

This is from deep in the Pete Hilton era, so you can see the commitment to perfection in the carving on the body and the carefully composed wood arrangement. The horn has beyond 3 dimensional carving. It really is a masterpiece. But don't take my word for it, let Carl tell ya all about it...

Sadly as I have gotten older, my physical situation is such that I have learned that the 36” scale life can no longer be for me...and the 32” Thompson’s are just a better fit despite my feelings on the tone and playability of Carl’s 36” scales.

I am ideally ISO the 32" twin of this instrument...but I know that isn't likely going to happen, so looking for a 32” scale 4 string Carl Thompson with ALL the frills
    • Top preference would be a 32" 5 string E > C (can add cash or trade as necessary)
    • Preference to Hilton era Thompsons, but open to all eras of Carl's basses. I would strongly consider the dali-esque bodies of the 90’s or other 34” scale Thompsons.
    • Would consider basses from the 70's...a bass from 78 would be my pref
    • Predominantly also looking for a 4 string or 5 E > C but I might be flexible here
    • All CT's are unique in their own way so show me what you got and we can figure it out...maybe a plus on my end, maybe a plus on your end?
Not really looking for anything other than a shorter than 36” scale Carl Thompson but I never say never so if you have something really special, you can try me (but please don’t waste my time with silly offers).

For the right Carl Thompson, I can offer on top of this bass...
    - cash
    - other basses
    - gear, pedals, amps, guitars, etc
    - ...pm me if you have a 32” Thompson amd we can figure it out

Is it active pr passive? Based on the controls I am guessing passive.

Correct. Passive w the normal passive controls for a CT. Kent Armstrong pickups, volume and passive tone shaping knobs and 2 3-position switches...1 for pickup selector (neck, both, bridge) and the other for mute, normal, and treble defeat switch.

My preference is a passive bass in return, but I'm not opposed to an active CT.

Wow what a beauty! I just got a 32 scale bass made from Joe (MBJ) who works for Carl. I want a CT bass so bad but was told about a 2 to 3 year wait so I had Joe build me a 32 and I love the way the 32 plays. Good luck what a beautiful bass hope you get what your looking for!

Pretty close to being locked down. Joe does some great work. I've been itching to try one of his basses. The shape is odd to me, but I imagine it feels like a dream.

That was my exact thought when I first saw his basses thought they did look a little funky compared to Hilton and CT which are very aesthetic to me but after playing did feel great very similar to the CT never played a Hilton though would love to try one. I would love to see pics of the bass your getting I love seeing Carl's work! Here's a pic of MBJ I just got. Just picked it up Sunday so still breaking it in

Yeah if I end up holding it forever so be it. Had a perfect trade worked out and then the owner couldn't part w his 32".

Hope all is well rich...happy new year!

I got to say I love playing my 32 MBJ but would love the sound of the 36! That CT you have would be almost exactly what I would want built. I'm in New York if you ever want to get together check out the MBJ just for Haha Im always down!

Definitely. I have a thread of locals and we are trying to find some time to get together and oogle each others basses/gear.

The 36" sounds far better than the 32...the stretches though :(

Hey Rich, I'd always take a look at pictures. Feel free to send to my email (PM me if you don't have he address). I've started playing this bass again a bit and for the time being I am pretty happy just hanging onto it, but as long as this thread is open I'll entertain pretty much anything cause ya never know.

Wow this one is beautiful man. I'm jealous, it even makes mine look sort of simple. Mine is also mainly a Pete Hilton build. 2014. I wish mine had the wood binding on the fingerboard like yours. But I still love it. 1107151811.jpg

Yes it's basically your bass with different woods and details. I know you wouldn't be looking for this as a trade.

No, would be pointless...unless you have someone with a great 32" CT looking for your bass and not mine.
