I think one of the problems with most ideas for bi-amping and such for bass rigs is a discrepancy in what certain frequencies actually sound like. I think if people would actually hear what frequencies greater than 500hz actually sounded like on electric bass they would realize why the speakers that are often proposed for running mid/highs are complete overkill.
What I would propose to anyone thinking about bi/tri-amping, is record a short clip of yourself playing. Then with any DAW software put a HPF around 500-1000hz or whatever frequency you're planning on crossing over. Then take a listen back to it and ask yourself if you would want to haul around something like a 4x10 or a 2x12 to reproduce those frequencies. I'm nearly certain that most wouldn't.
