Triamplified

Been doing some engineering work and playing with the idea of running 3 cabs triamped. I do not condone this to anyone but theoretically it will work. Idea:

1st Section: 2 - Epifani UL2-115 set side by side (will handle low freq at 4ohms in parallel)

2nd Section: 1 - Genz Benz Uber 212 (midrange/low-mid freqs at 4 Ohms)

3rd Section: 1 - Bergantino AE410 (upper mids/highs)

Maybe A-Designs Pacifica Preamp, 3 channel power amp, some additional EQ and compressor, etc......

So, who wants to fund this idea ;)

It's good to dream!

Not my best photo editing. Just quick for giggles. lol.

I'm with you on the preamp :)

Dirk lance from Incubus used to do this - two 410 eden cabs for highs powered by 1000 watts and an eden nav, two 410 eden cabs for mids powered by 1000 watts and an eden nav and two 118 eden cabs for lows powered by 1000 watts and an eden nav

Sounds like overkill to me and not a very well balanced system but he got a great tone from it

On such a big stage, you may not have heard much of his rig at all...most likely it was the PA, don't you think? I suppose if I had techs to set everything up, I might start dreaming up something that screwy...prolly not :)

Interesting but probably not the most efficient use of an array of full-range speakers. Same holds true for a multitude of bi-amp concept threads here on TB.

It does look cool as all get-out, though!

Edit: I do tri-amp our PA.....Xover'd at 100 hz / 630 hz and with separate power sources for the 18" subs, 15" mains, and 5" midrange / tweeter components.

Er... why?

Aren't all those cabs full range? I don't think tri-amping them would really be any better than running them full range. Furthermore, mids and especially highs do not take anywhere near as much power or as many speakers to reproduce at the same volume as lows.

Using this setup, you'd have a 2x12 for the mids when all you really need is a couple mid range drivers, probably either 6" or 8", and a whole 4x10 for highs, which is even more overkill.

You can do it, and it will probably sound fine, but I don't think it'll have much advantage over running those cabs full range, and it's not ideal for that kind of setup.

But it would certainly be possible. Just reread your OP and realized this is theoretical, not an actual plan.

My Tri amp rig.
ACC 408 4X15 LF
JBL 2 X 12 2206 mid
JBL 2 X 2" horns
Yeah the 2206 drivers are bass/mids but the rig has not got the wall shuddering bass without the trusty old Acoustic 408 doing the low end, all crossed over via a JBL DSC 260 feeding Crown MA series power amps and a SVTiip pre amp.

neat idea in principle, but, running three cabs designed for full range sound reproduction isn't optimal.
If you want to maximise the potential of your idea, you'll need dedicated bass bins, and, mid range and treble bins.

If you do it as is, have fun and report back.

Been doing some engineering work
No, you haven't. A rig engineered for tri-amping would use speakers designed for use as separate lowbass/midbass/midrange and high frequency sources. You can't do that with off the shelf electric bass cabs because none are so designed.

two 4x10 cabs with a kilowatt running highs only? Ah man, that's just silly.

IMO If you are triamping bass guitar rigs, I'd hope you are doing so out of exploring ultra low freq ranges for extended bass, otherwise its pretty much a solution looking for a problem.

How do we know the Epi 15s will produce better lows than either the Genz or the Berg? Or that the Berg will produce better highs?

This idea seems based upon the thoroughly debunked notion that speaker size matters in frequency response.

Get yourself two 1515/66 and call it a day. I think some of the builders will put in biamp option, and I bet some of them could even figure out a triamp option if you really want it.

One of those will put out 132 db with about 1600 watts. What on Earth you would need with that much sound I have no idea.

If you had two I am pretty sure you should take out an insurance policy because some audience members will be suing you for hearing loss.
