If your mods were one or two cosmetic things I didn't count it. That's like putting rims on a Pontiac Sunfire and calling it a hot rod.

Hi everyone,
here's a shoot of the aforementioned Squier, actually a former Vintage Modified '70s Jazz.

This bass has some reknowned weaknesses:
the neck has 20 black big blocks frets, but tend to bow very often, also with a full step downtuning
the pickups, Duncan Designed, are honestly just... "average"

This bass again also has some strength, namely being a Jazz bass and sporting an unconventionallly resonant maple body.

I stuck to the body to make it work
I put a Praha 21 fret '70s Precision bass maple neck
I put a couple of original Bartolini singles
I swapped Fender's neckplate, stringholder and Splinter input
I added a Hipshot BT7 bass extender

I know it's now worth twice its original street price: but it kills!


It stays side to side to a Yamaha Attitude Special, also slightly
modded
DiMarzio WillPower "woofer" and "split" pickups Hipshot BT7 and
scallopped frets from 17th thru 21st (just like original Attitude)

It looks like LzeroKI pretty much answered your question.

I would recommend that you trace the pickguard you choose on paper, cut the paper out to make a template then modify the template to fit the neck (etc.) on the bass. Once the paper template fits perfectly, transfer the new lines to the pickguard and remove the unnecessary material.

In order to be able to see the markings, put a layer of masking tape on the pickguard so you can see your lines.

I use a jgsaw (with a fine tooth blade for cutting metal) for the rough cutting, then a hand file for finer work and sand paper to finish the edges. Some folks use a rotary tool (aka Dremel) or similar...I don't trust myself with that and just take my time and sneak up on the line (frequently checking it on the instrument to make sure it fits).

Cool, I appreciate the technique advice BillyB. I am trying to find out if a MIM active jazz V pickguard will be close enough to the right size for me to modify. I also plan to do a bit of reshaping of the bottom of Pickguard since I am not going to try and put a control plate on the bass. I don't feel the need to try and make it really resemble a Fender completely. I just think a pickguard will make the bass look sharp.

Alright so I have a pair of questions for you guys. Hope you can help me with these.

There's just one thing that I don't like about my VM Jazz. Humming. When I turn the tone all the way up the humming is notorius so I would like to know what can I do to eliminate that? I was thinking about shielding the control cavity but I'm not much an electronics expert.

The other one. Will CTS pots fit into the control plate holes? Is it very hard to replace them?

You can try shielding, but it did not work for me w/ my original single coil. Your VM Jazz has 2 pickups, right? They should(or at least could) be wired to opposite polarities. This would have humbucking effect. It might require rewiring.
Unless the hum another source. Does it go away if you touch the bridge? Altho, its possible the ground wire is not working properly...

For the CTS pots, I think all pots are standard diameter(or at least close enough), so it should fit. They just screw in with a nut. Easy. But you will have to do some soldering which isn't hard, but does take some practice to consistently get good connections.

my squier vm had small pots, the pot kit i got for it had large pots. could have sent them back but decided to drill out the plate to accept the new, wider pots.

stay with the small pots for replacement if you can. leaves a LOT more room in the cavity

Yep, DC power in. I called it a preamp, but it's really more of a headphone amp so I can practice. I didn't want to be replacing 9V's all the time, so I wired in a power jack. If I ever need it for real use, I can pull all that stuff out pretty easily. I used a bunch of quick-connects so I can reconfigure w/o soldering.
