What the heck!? Thought this was HIS bass, Joe!
Of course it's HIS bass. I just know that there's a lot of appreciation for an un-screwed and un-routed front on a bass by some people.
I'm just emoting for the loss of a virginal body here, that's all. Virgins are getting harder and harder to find now.
At least there is no mention of stickers --- yet.
Ha! Just saw you over on the "stickers = trashy bass" thread Joe! I agree with the virgin body thing but as I like to say "everybody has their thing"

debating on doing that to mine. i need some jazz knobs still too.
thought about everything i could do to mod this bass....its pretty good as is.

Would that also mean that my VM J is tricked out as well? All my mods (knobs, covers, thumb rest) were all for strictly aesthetic reasons, to get as close to a 70's look as I could:
If I could find a chrome bullet to fit on my truss rod adjustment nut, I'd add that too. (anyone know of such a thing?)

Wow, funny coincidence. I bought the last Olympic White! It's Decent save for a few anomalies you mention here. In fact, there is a crack in the poly. But Brian discounted my shipping cost for this, I agreed to the terms. I was going to use it for a project bass. But I got all decent parts, and nothing fit on the body, not a thing. So I ordered a factory second Allparts alder jazz body, which the salesman said really doesn't need a thing, lucked out! I get it this coming week.
The Oly white will become a "beater bass" and I just ordered one of those cheapie necks you might see on flea bay stating "free tuners." I will likely have to route the neck pocket nonetheless.

Try Allparts. I talked with the sales guy for a while. They have both alder and ash bodies. A lot of five screw necks and come to think of it, neck pickup holes fitting larger pups, exactly what you are looking for! Sixty bucks. Good luck!

Promised delivery date from my luthier to have my Squier tricked out into a Franken-ASAT-Jazz is tomorrow. But, that guy is not so reliable on delivery dates... Can't wait to solder in the new tone circuit.
Heres a 4 string Squier P that I got from a coworker for $75.00:
Ive owned around 10 Pbasses over the years and this one has been the best player out of the bunch. The body is the lightest of any P Ive ever handled and the additional J pickup and Hipshot A bridge added some heft and gave the bass better balance and tone. A Warmoth pickguard, new tuners, CTS pots, orange drop cap and Seymour pickups. Heres the same bass with it's new cheezy spray can finish and tung oil neck:
Having been a 4 string bass player for about 32 years at the time, I finally decided to get a 5 string. My experiences modifying basses taught me that I could get a great playing and sounding bass by starting with the right instrument.
One day while checking out some pawn shops I found this Squier 5 string all dusty and hidden, hanging up high and out of reach in a remote corner:
The neck had a significant bow which I felt could be rectified if the truss rod was in working condition. The pickguard was warped, but other than these issues, the bass looked as if no one had ever really played it. I expressed my truss rod concern to the owner, and he was anxious to move this bass as it had been there for a few years. He agreed that if I couldnt get the truss rod to adjust properly he would refund my money if I brought the bass back that day.
The truss rod adjusted perfectly, I cleaned the bass up and was amazed at the playability of this thing! A seriously solid chunk of neck tone! The bad news was the inadequate pickups that were stock on this model of bass- they barely reproduce the low b. I had gone into this project wanting to replace all the hardware and pickups anyway, so it was a non issue really. I decided to completely ditch the big ugly pickguard, throw in a little bondo (for killer bass tone) put in some passive soapbars, and run all black hardware. I stripped the body, handcarved the new pickup routes and had some fun. From Hipshot came the ultralite tuners, A bridge, and the string tree. The soapbars are Seymour Duncans, CTS pots and orange drop cap. The small custom pickguard I cut from a piece I got from Warmoth. I applied a tung oil finish to the neck. After spending about $550 total on the bass including all the new hardware and the bass itself Im blown away by the sound and playability of this bass.

The Seymour passive soapbars have a very unique tone which I really enjoy- Ive never been able to find a review anywhere on these pickups. All in all, Im blown away by the playability and tone of this amazing bass. Ill never forget that first Van Halen album in 1978 when some nobody kid with a pile of crap parts guitar blew everyones mind with his tone and skill. It doesnt take a 10K custom bass to make beautiful tone.

Ah, thanks. Now that I know it exists, i looked to see if BassPartsResource has it and they do, a genunine Fender part and a cheaper unbranded aftermarket one. Cheap enough to buy one and see if it fits.

$60 is fair. Thanks for the lead. Now I just need to decide between this or a VM jazz body, about twice the cost. I can stain the allparts one as I please but clear-coating is another matter, one that I don't look forward to. That may be the deciding factor.
Can anyone comment on the differences between alder & ash bass bodies?

If you want to go with a stained body but are worried about final finishing do some searching around here for threads about using Tru-Oil gunstock finish. (Not certain on spelling.) Given what I've read it seems to be quite easy to get a really fabulous outcome. Many first-timers report great results. I've read about it in some guitar forums, too, and again it gets a lot of love.
iJazz - There's a Tru-Oiled finish in my future.
