tried an ibanez SRH500 today...

Yes, great strings, I also liked them a lot, but I want it with a high C so I thought I would finally try the infamous Jazz Flats.
Although I play one finger per fret, I have girl hands (ahah), so the 16,5mm spacing and 45mm nut convinced me. So far so good!

my bass is supposed to arrive tomorrow (tuesday).
my first bass was a loaned extra long scale 5 string - it was massive! i have girly hands (comes from being a 5' 3" femle), and i played it as my only bass for over a year. only the other hand, i don't usually use my pinky.
so how are the TI flats on it so far?
I was very afraid about the tension, because I am used to D'Addario half wounds and those have a lot more tension.
But I have a tendency to play hard with the right hand, and sometimes I just don't like the sound it produces (not the string, my right hand). I have Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde hands. The left is very soft and wants low action, but the right hand is a brute and wants to play hard. So i thought I would change everything on this bass, since it already is so different than my Jazz Basses with 38mm neck and high action.
I am trying to force myself to be more melodic and "nice". That E string is a challenge, I must confess, it wobbles a lot.
Regarding the sound I am finding them fantastic. And they are so smooth, I never played strings so easy on the left hand before.

the bass arrived. i opened up the boxes, took it out, plugged it in and... nothing. just a quiet hum i've never heard out of my amp before. i'm in search of a battery as the first step.
the problem was a dead battery - and wow, does this bass sound as good as i remembered! smooth and warm with a hint of bite. i'll do a NBD after i've had a little time with it, but right now i'm a happy camper
A big name like Sweetwater didn't care to do pre-delivery inspection...?
Anyhow, it shouldn't be arriving with empty battery, since the SRH are relatively new model. You weren't using the included cheap instrument cable, were you?
the problem was the battery - it's fully discharged, and the bass was reviewed by one bass magazine almost a year and a half ago, so it could be holder than you think. and no, i wasn't using the included cable, if there is one. i used one of my regular cables, then tried another one.
i was a little surprised that sweetwater didn't check the battery, but all's well that ends well. it works find and sounds like a dream.

Yeah, an instrument cable should be included in the box (and a couple of allen key singles to set the truss rod and saddles). But never mind, I've a bunch of these cables from every Ibanez basses and guitar I purchased. I've never used them.
So, you got a note from Sweetwater saying the unit you were getting had been sent to magazine for reviews? Did you get some kind of special price due to sort of usage?
i have at least 30 of those cheap cables unopened in their packages. i don't know why i keep them.
i was unclear. my point was that there are reviews of this model that are a year and a half old, and sweetwater has had this exact bass listed for a while, so this bass could easily be a year old...

Yes, the first batch of the Aerium SRH basses were made in the late 2016 and entered the market in early 2017. But since you've just got yours, I would have guessed it's from latest production batch (1P-03). Because Ibanez only made the Bass Workshop series in limited numbers and sent all over the world. So, I wouldn't expect yours was from 1P-01 production (2016/11 - 2017/10) nor even 1P-02 production (2017/07 - 2017/10).
You can confirm which one is yours from what's printed on the back of the headstock.
But my point is, a new bass shouldn't have come with an empty battery. Especially that since there's no plug which stays in the output jack, thus battery drain shouldn't be happening. Although, I must disclose that I have 3 basses (4 if I were to include the acoustic electric bass) with piezo pickups (and the supporting preamp) and they all are relatively faster in draining the battery compared to other basses which electronics paired with only magnetic pickup(s). But still, as long as there's no plug in its output jack, the battery should be internally disconnected, thus the battery shouldn't be drained.
Hope there's nothing wrong with the internal connect/disconnect mechanism in the output jack of your Aerium.

mine IS an 1P-01, actually. i emailed ibanez the serial number, and they tell me that the bass was made in october of 2016, so it's pretty much new old stock and one of the first SRH500s made. i'm fine with that, but the battery is probably the original, so it's been sitting for just shy of 2 years.
btw, stayed up late playing it. it's a really nice bass, and i love the chromes.

Love the Chromes too on my SRH505, although (like I wrote earlier on this thread) I've swapped the 4 highest strings with Chromes Super Light Gauge ECB80 set (and then use Chromes single .055 from BSO for the D string) which I find way more easier on my fingers than stock Chromes Regular Light ECB81 set.

i, too, have finger issues. so i ordered a set of super light chromes a few days ago from TB - they should be here tomorrow
