Trinity Trip Top Review (B15 Content)

Wise move. I'll take old 6SL7's, even your basic cheap Sylvanias of the day, over new ones any day of the week. Except possibly the new Tung Sols, which I've not tried but I'm told are really good. The other tubes I'll buy new...have not noticed any changes switching between old and new on the rec and power tubes. But definitely with 6SL7's.

Me neither. I was, too, and all I care about is that they work and don't sound crappy. So far, only new 6SL7's sound crappy to me. Everything else I have that uses tubes get new ones once the last of my old stock gets depleted.

Whatever 6SL7 is in my Broughton P15 sounds good to my ears, but I have absolutely zero basis for comparison. This is the first 6SL7 tube circuit I've ever used.
I love the way it breaks up when being pushed into an amp/cab (VS my usual DI). Much more musical and more pleasant crunch IMO than the typical 12AX7 drive.

Josh originally built it with new tubes and I talked him into trying NOS, and I believe that's what you'll find in your p15.

Well I guess at the low price he's selling them, you can't expect better. GET RID OF IT!!!

:D

Seriously, getting a NOS 6SL7, even if you get the most dirt cheap one you can find, is worth it in the P15. The Sovtek IMHO is OK at best.

lol as I said, I have no basis for comparison. Any NOS tubes in particular that you would recommend?

and my apologies for the slight derail here. I think we’re still at least somewhat on topic ;)

Even the cheapest NOS 6SL7 is great. Some of the cheaper ones I've seen are from Sylvania, which is what Ampeg usually used back in the day. For the Heritage B-15, Ampeg used JAN Philips 6188's (6SL7 with a different part number) because they were cheap, available in bulk, and way better than old ones. No need to get the most expensive one by any means. But do get rid of the Sovtek. Trust me on that.

well I just asked Stephen at trinity directly and he said that due to low sales he decided not to restock the kit at this time, but business otherwise is very good and everyone is well.
he is very kind and helpful, and when I bought my kit I had no idea what kind of support I would get, but I got all the help I could have imagined. I strongly recommend trinity to anyone looking for a kit.
fyi!

If anyone is interested in these kits, Trinity are taking deposits for Trip Top kits to ship in January. I just put a deposit down last week and found this thread while doing some research and thought I'd share.

If the B15N I am looking for locally doesn’t end here (I’m the next if 1st guy doesn’t buy it, I doubt he won’t like it!), I’ll pull the trigger.

Nice! I hope it works out for you.

I put a deposit down for the kit and was talking to my cousin about it and he happened to have two old 15" Portaflex cabs he was using for an old doom metal band he was in and he's going to give me one, so I'm pretty stoked about that.

Maybe a little off topic but wondering if any of you can describe the tonal difference between the Trinity Trip Top and the current Ampeg Pf-50t. I need to get a good, low volume practice amp. I love that classic 60s B15N tone but probably don't have the patience to deal with an actual vintage amp. I just want the tone. I don't need DI outs or any modern bells and whistles.

The Pf-50t is tempting because it's in my price range and I can just buy it, plug it in, and play it. But it sounds like the Trinity has that classic B15 tone. Does the Pf-50t? Or can it be made to? I don't mind swapping a few tubes out if that's going to make it work.

Thanks!
