Trouble with vocalist

Ppl need to realize that its just a bar band... you don't just "fire" someone, and hire someone the next day. This is their hobby not their jobs. A good singer is not going to just show up (although in this case it did, but that is very lucky). Not to mention, since it's really just a hobby, that means the people you play with are your friends too. Sounds like I would never want to be friends with a lot of you, if all it takes is one little disagreement and your just going to "fire" me. I play in a bar band with 3 of my best friends (besides my girlfriend) and if any of them quit, we can't just replace them with anyone. It would be the end of the band.

If you think the actions of the vocalist are the actions of a 'friend' then enjoy grabbing your ankles as someone 'friends' you.

There are different level of bar bands. If we're talking a dad band/buddy band type thing that plays to the friends they convince to come to the local bar and grill once a month, then you wouldn't go firing someone everytime they have a crazy day. But for a popular band with a big fanbase and a full schedule, a flake can be a major pain in the butt to the person who runs the band.

I'm not saying I'm always down for the instant firing, but sure would be canning the OP's singer ASAP (if she hadn't already quit, that is).

I actually recently fired a guy with two fingers' attitude. It's cool if you've got more interesting things to do than gig, but you're not going to get the benefit of a steady gig when it suits you. You go be a hired gun and gig when your social life allows, and I'll bring in someone who actually wants the spot.

I don't know what kind of friends you have, but sh** happens, you get in a disagreement and ppl see things in different ways. But there has been no issue in 18 months then this happens randomly? So you fire her? It could have just been that time of the month. I realize her actions were pretty ridiculous, but I completely understand why OP wanted to hear from her what she actually thought about the whole thing.

My bar band has been working our asses off building gigs, following, strong songs/setlist for four years. We rehearse once a week at the least, and sometimes more. Every song has a beginning, an ending, and has to be played a certain way. We have to know our place in the mix. We have to know how to interact with each other in order to be tight. We have to do all these things in order to stand out, and not sound like a hundred other bar bands.

If you bailed on me, got upset that I replaced you with a sub, and stood and looked me in the eye and told me I take this all too seriously, I would pop you.

I guarantee it.

SHE QUIT

Do you people not read these threads?

LOL +1, I have that thought ALL the time.

I was actually just thinking that earlier today after reading this:

Ask the girl who just filled in if she wants 3 more paying jobs and if she'd consider joining the band.

...since I had already read post #39...

:p :D

Yeah, thats what I get for responding to the original post. Thats the one where the OP mentions the singer quitting.
He didnt post about the sub taking over until post #39. My advice still stands. :p

Reputation is the key feature. It takes a lot of gigs to get one, and just one wrecked gig to ruin it! It doesn't matter if they are pro musicians or amateurs, your word is really important. Pro bands may have proper contracts that get signed and swapped, but in the UK, verbal contracts, if they are evidenced, hold up. Will you do the gig next Friday? Yes. If tickets get sold and then it gets cancelled, any loss would be recoverable. The singer needs to appreciate agreeing to do a gig is not a flexible commitment. I hate scarbbing around to replace a missing person - it's a real pain, but expecting the entire band to lose out rather than getting a dep in is just selfish and prima donnish. In a way, I'd have expected her to arrange cover if she said she could do it - and then you wouldn't be in this position.

Dump her!

Sharp advice. You're on top of the situation!
