Troubleshooting something totally bizarre

well everyone else seems to do fine with a micro vr and two 210av's, so i'm still going by ampeg's theory that there's something going on with my head that causes it ;) i have quite enjoyed the education i'm getting, but i'm still keeping a positive outlook.
Wow this is heavy.I thought a company like Ampeg would have tested this to the letter.Ive seen them review the setup on YT & it didnt seem to have any problems with two cabs.Maybe Jim you might be overpowering the little rig ?
But by the sounds of it its a big no & the amp is no good.I hope they replace it.

sorry for the reply delay, growly...must have missed this...nah, definitely not overpowering it ;) and i used the head and one cab this weekend on my gig and it worked like a champ. not really a heavy problem, though. just one of those strange things that i'm sure can easily be corrected.

nope. i'm totally slammed with gigs this week anyway and probably won't have much of a chance to work on it anyway. however, i did 3 gigs with it on one cab over the past 3 days, and not only did it work perfectly, but even on my house of blues gig tonight where we were pretty screaming loud, it rocked hard. i haven't played that loud in a long time. felt good, to be honest.

if i get a chance, i'm thinking about taking it all down to gc on tuesday and see if they'll let me try their floor model with my cabs. but since it's my only day off this week, i may just vegetate ;)

Not a bad problem to have, I wouldn't worry much about it now, especially considering what else you've got to play with.:smug:
WINNING!!!

speaking of which, i loaded up my blue line and 810 for the first time since early december. got a gig today with davy jones, so i have to let davy's bassist use my svt. honestly, it wasn't that bad to move...but i'll see if i say that at 10 pm when my 10 hour day is over ;)

Even though I advise most folks "don't let just anybody pound on your stuff"...that's general advise. I actually like having good players play my stuff...gives me a chance to hear, and appreciate it, from another perspective...unattached.

As far as it being almost midnight and you've got a 10 hour day today that ends at 10....well, that's just a sign of success....wait, it's 1 your time, so it is today....makes total sense.

Edit: Or are you in some other time zone on a sweet gig with davey jones or bowser........lucky bastage...good job.

I don't think you'll find too many folks sporting a function generator who aren't capable of understanding that basic little procedure. :smug:

Heh. This is the InterWebz. It's not safe to assume anything. :D

Well, since it definitely looks like a combination issue involving head and cab - it's only going to be a hint where to look.

Agreed. Jimmy, let us know when there's anything new, eh?

Given that the 3 setups have comparable DC impedances, it seems odd that the problem should only occur with the 210AVs and still be thought to be in the head. Of course, I am far from expert in these matters...
The AC impedence is vastly different than DC resistance.

My bet is there's something odd about the load the amp is seeing, or a defect in the amp that makes it sensitive to the load.

Shouldn't be anything too non-standard about the cabs response. Its all drivers in a sealed or ported box, with or without a crossover. Could be the cab tuning putting a low impedence value at a particular freq that the amp isn't happy with, either because of the design or a defect with the amp.

There's no reason to settle for impedance problems anymore, now that they have "the little blue pill" available.

Jimmy, any further info on what's going on? I'm wanting to pick up a second 210 cab for my micro, but am a little worried.
they're out of heads right now but they're sending me a new head once they get another batch in. then they want me to ab it with the old head and see if it does it. but nobody thinks anything is wrong with the cabs and neither do i. but everyone there says this is the first time they ever heard of it happening, and they couldn't have been nicer about the whole thing, plus a ton of people have two cabs with their micro vr, so i'd say buy with confidence.

Resolved yet?
yep. we figured out there was nothing wrong with the heads or cabs. i'm still not 100% sure what's going on but i think i have a bass that's really hot in the low end freqs that i couldn't hear so well and didn't realize it. backing off the low end and figuring out an alternate eq for that bass seems to have helped. i don't know for sure, but that's the best i can figure it. it also might be that the gain gets more sensitive with 4 ohm operation, but again, i'm just spitballing here. either way, though, i have figured out an alternate plan that works for me, so i'm good with it.

I'm going to bet on phasing. Did you check your speaker cables to make sure you don't have a wire crossed in one of them?
yep. even bought a meter to check impedances. but i'm getting more volume out of it now by backing off the gain and low end. still sounds good, still has grunt. i'm still not sure what causes it with two cabs when it doesn't happen with one, but i can deal with it. the folks at ampeg were great to deal with, btw.

Does it do it regardless of where the speakers are postioned (stacked vs. side by side)? I've noticed some odd ball things when I run three 2x15's standing side by side as opposed to just two. Sometimes depending on the room, three just doesn't sound "right" - but two of them will sound golden.
