Diesel pickups only save $$ when they run all day every day. Commercial use.

Better late than never to respond.....

In all reality I didn't pay a premium for that diesel truck. It was a case of being in the right place at the right time and I'd rather be lucky than good. I bought that truck for $4000, which is about half of what it was worth and about the same as a gas powered truck would have cost me. In fact. I paid $1000 more for the two year newer gas powered crew cab I bought for my wife a few months later.

The savings for me were instant..... with the amount of towing and plowing snow that I do, I should have bought a diesel sooner.

Bought my 02 Tundra new. Only 160k miles, so just getting broken in. We do a lot of camping, and recently finished a 5k mile/ month long trip out west (CO & NM.) Best vehicle I’ve ever owned. Mileage sucks when towing, but compared to what would pay for lodging and restaurants it’s economical.

I love the pre 81 square body GM trucks with the round headlights and vertical sidemarkers. Too bad they're few and far between in the salt belt.

I've owned a few of those pickups and probably a dozen Blazers. I've still got one, a 79 Blazer with one ton axles, a 454 and 44" Super Swampers.

That's cool you've owned it that long. I've had my 79 Blazer and 68 SS396 El Camino since 1993, and my 81 Camaro since 1985.

I'm down to just a 1992 Volvo 240 wagon currently. I'm currently house hunting and hope to be relocated within the next 3 months to somewhere with at least an acre and a 2 car garage (attached or detached). I am mainly looking on the northwestern edge of NJ north of Trenton and following the Delaware to the corner of NJ/PA/NY. Once I am settled... I'm going to be hunting for a 67-72 GM SUV to build as a mild daily driver

Rust, dents...dirt that napalm wouldnt remove...no a/c, cruise control, or abs...no muffler...general decrepitude after 250,000 miles.

However, it always starts, runs like a champ, and could pull a garage off its foundation. I hide it behind the barn.

In NZ diesel is way cheaper than petrol but you pay milage tax on diesels. So if your truck guzzles fuel the tax paid per litre is way less on diesel than petrol.

Now that they are much refined in the noise and driveability the big diesel SUV's are much more popular here.

What do we know about the 2.8 Duramax built in Thailand or Malaysia, I forget which?

The wife is complaining about not having a 4x4 any more... as much as a truck would be cool, we are moving this spring to one town away from my folks who have a 10 year old full sized Ram with a Hemi in it as the family plow/farm pickup. As a solution to the 4x4 situation, I am thinking of picking up a Volvo XC90 V8. The 60 degree Yamaha designed & built V8 makes some decent power (311 bhp / 325 lb⋅ft... and 0-100 km/h in 7 seconds) and I have always had a thing for Volvo

I miss my 93 Grand Cherokee and my 95 Cherokee. Too bad WNY winters took their toll on them. Although both ran great and were well over 200k, the bodies were both pretty rough when I sold them.

Still, the 93 GC was hands down the best winter vehicle I've ever owned. I had knobby mud tires on it and with the Quadra Trac transfer case (versus the Select Trac the 95 had) it was an animal in the snow.

Paint that truck gray and it could be the twin of my old 80 K20. I bought mine from the original owner for $1100....... he gave me a mound of receipts since day one that even detailed the 454 install he had done in 1981.

I put a Western plow on the truck, used it for 5 years and sold it for $1700.
