Hey everyone! I just joined this forum yesterday and really need help with my new bass. I've got a squier vintage modified p bass I bought in a music shop a few hours away from where I live back in May and it's had some setup problems since. One, the bass seemed to have a slightly large bow at the time and I don't really have any allen wrenches handy, and there's a lot of ridiculous fret buzz on the D string at the 3rd fret. Another is the nut action is cut too small for my strings to sit perfectly there. Instead I have to pop them in there but they don't have much playability (around the 6th fret my G string doesn't hold a long note). I took it to a music shop last week to see if someone down there could help me out, instead the guy there just made the situation worse with fret buzz on ALL THE FRETS. So that's where I am right now.. If I could get any help soon it would me very much appreciated. Thanks!

It's going to need a full setup, either learn how by reading the stickies at the top of this forum or find a knowledgable tech to do it for you.

^^ T-Bird speaks the truth. Needs a setup. BUT, that quick note decay around fret 6 on the G string is so common as to be considered inherent in the design of the bass. My personal instrument is absolutely bitchin', but even it has slightly less fundamental sustain around C# on the G string!

  4. ^ Yeah - take it to a Tech with all you're describing, but the strings do need to seat properly in the nut - so it needs to be filed or go to a smaller string gauge - the stock size will do.

Yeah and like the boys above say, the G string issue is quite normal. The usual comment is "how long does one really need that note to sustain while playing songs in the real world?" The answer is usually not very long, measured in fractions of seconds.

Yeah, I see. I'm starting to get used to setting up my bass myself. But I'll see what tech will say so I get some hands on experience. Thanks guys!
