I bough a tab book off eBay for GNR, just to have it, best of GnR for bass. In it there's an interview with Duff. This interview was from guitar mag, April 1992.

Regarding recording appetite Duff said he used his first amp, GK 800rb, NOT a 400rb. He said he always blew speakers so he got 400w EVs. He said he recorded using his fender JBS onto an acoustic 2x15 cab with the 2 EV speakers. 2 track, one Di and the other, the bottom speaker miked.

He said that is what was used and that he used the exact same thing for the illusions.

Those GK RB's got a great tone. I had an acoustic 2X15 Bass cab back in those days. I wonder if it was the same cab.

Just ordered a used 800RB to use with my Mesa 2x15. We'll see how it sounds at practice.

Yeah, I always use my ampeg 8x10 with mine BUT I've got my eyes open for a 2x15 locally. Listening to iso tracks off AFD today, I can hear a 15 moreso than 10s.

Speaker sizes don't have tones. The cabs they're in do.

Thanks for this. Strange he would use an 800RB in the studio since you have to get really loud to hit the rails. But he said later that he used a 400RB in the studio, am I right? The other thing is that the 15" cabs he used in the late 80s and early 90s tours (GK 115B and 115T) came with 200W EVM 15Bs. So maybe he swapped them for the 400W versions and put them in those same cabs.
