Double Bass Trying to build a multi bass rack

Hi all. I’m the least likely person to be able to pull this off, but I’m wondering if anyone has successfully built a multi upright bass rack and had a “pattern” or can provide some direction as to what is needed to do such a thing.

I just purchased my seventh bass and need a rack to store some of them (ideally four on one rack).

I’d love to give it a try myself before I sink $1000 into just buying one. (I’m up for a challenge and a glutton for punishment 😂)

TYIA for any info you can share.

Well yes, you can build anything... only limited by funds and space. Your storage area will dictate your design. A four-spaced-roller might be difficult depending on your space due to the sheer length of the rack needed.

In my small space, I went with individual ones so basses could be moved around, but building a "rack" would be easy, there are many designs online to adapt and inspire your own design. Universities tend to have 'wall racks' or 'long rollers'. I ve seen some built from 2x4s with wheel screwed to the bottom. (I bet that Music Program director built that out of 'their own pocket' as a simple answer to their problem)

My design is utilitarian, based on simplicity and what was easily available at the local big box in NYC (this was over 10yrs ago so ALOT has changed in access and availability to supplies here in the city—but I digress.)

I used 1x6x72" Hardwood. (was going to stain them dark and add felt padding, but left them natural)
Constructed with hand powertools, for cutting, notching, drilling. But these could also easily be built with hand tools and more 'elbow grease'. 😁 Final dimensions are 16x16x9", held together with dowels and Titebond III.

My basses are all different sizes and contours, so each stand has been block planed to match the contour of each bass' bouts.

Highly recommend a DIY build (if your motivated like that) as you'll get a product that matches your needs.
