Trying to record, doing something wrong.

Active bass > Amplifier > XLR out set to line position > Line in on soundcard.

Should I be doing anything else before I can get sound out? I'm using Acid pro (and/or Cool Edit).....and by simply clicking record and playing I get nothing....maybe this is horribly naive and I'm missing a step? Let me know

Something like that problem is usually related to the input device set in your program for recording. When I record, I have to go into my Audigy EQ and turn on the "what u hear" option so that the line-in plays via wav output. One thing to remember is to make sure that your computer doesn't have any system sounds enabled (mouse click noises, etc...) if you are using the "what u hear" option (provided that you have that as an option for a recording device). Also, make sure that your line in isn't muted in your audio controls for either the soundcard audio control panel, or the windows audio/volume control panel.

Edit: make sure you set your recording volume down a bit... if you have loud volume for recording, as well as on the amp and bass, chances are you'll exceed the vu limits and the recording will have distortion where it gets too loud. When you're recording to computer, when it comes to volume, remember that less is more.

Heh wow it says my Mic and Line In "aren't plugged in"....I use onboard sound on my motherboard, so does this mean that the power supply is not hooked up to those audio aspects? Just wondering before I have to power off and open up......

Sounds more like a setup issue for the soundcard management software. Chances are line-in and mic are disabled.

Many computer manufacturers use the Crystal Audio AC-97 chipset nowadays... depending on how old the computer is. It could also be a glitch with the drivers, which means a reinstall of that software.

Go into the control panel and make sure that the correct audio devices are enabled as default, and go into your options on the program and make sure that the device is enabled. There may also be a "connections" window, and if you can find it you may have to define the inputs and outputs in there (I am not sure about the software you are using though...). If you want to test to see if its the sound card, download Audacity and try recording in it. The interface it uses is really simple and is very easy to set up; if you cannot record with your sound card in there it is probably a hardware issue.
