Hey everyone. I've been wondering, are tube amps really worth it if you aren't going to use them for distortion? Can you get the same warm sound with a solid state? Obviously it would depend on the amp and cab, but for this, let's just say a Markbass tube amp.
Let's Discuss.
Tort! When you say “worth it” what exactly do you mean?
Depending on what you buy or how you buy it, a tube amp is not necessarily more expensive than a SS amp.
I currently have two heads and I have a little less into the Fender than I do the GK.

If you're talking ALL tube, tube power AND pre amp, and not just a tube pre amp.... and, nicely designed and made ones... then, yes it's totally worth it and no, solid state cannot do the same things but, as usual, it depends.
On the amp, the cab, the player....
Some all tube amps ain't designed to do the lush, gooey thing that others ARE designed to do. Some tube amps(& when I say TUBE AMP, I'm meaning ALL tube... power and pre ) are designed to be quite tight sounding
I like the lush, gooey ones myself. So, SVT-VR, Fender Super Bassman, Orange AD200B do it 4 me.
Well he owns one and uses it sometimes, so I'd probably say yes.Do you count the v4b as an amp like you stated above?

I was not aware that Markbass made an all tube amp?

LOL! That's what keeps me away from tubesIn short, yes. Yes they are. Plus you get a free gym membership with your purchase.
True. There is the common rumor about tube amps not able to produce this "hi-fi tone SS amps can produce. To me this is complete BS. Both can be hi-fi or fat and massive. It's just different.Tube amps being only good for distortion is 100% a creation of the internet due to the grunge era. I started playing in 76, and though there were bass players who ran tube amps distorted, it was pretty rare. I still run my tube amps clean, too.
I agree, otherwise Id take a Marantz 2500 all dayOnly really worth it if it's a McIntosh.
