Tuned to C + Ampeg 8x10 = bad idea?

Is that C on the bottom the C that is a half step up from the bottom of a 5-6 string, or are you going an octave lower?

He's talking about C1 32.7 Hz.

FWIW, Ampeg 8x10s are rated from 58hz-5khz, however they are sealed cabs that have a flatter response. I would imagine 58hz-5khz is a flat rating, whereas they still produce the fundamental, just at -3db to -10db depending. Anyone who has played through a fridge knows that they produce every fundamental on a 5 string bass just fine.

Also, another poster brought up the dual SVT/8x10 setup, and seeing as that's what Scott Reeder has always used, I couldn't agree more. I don't really understand how it works but I know the more cone surface area, the better the fundamental comes through, sort of like it becomes flat down to 30hz by default when you have enough speakers. Some one else chime in on this who actually knows what they're talking about?

The problem probably isn't your head. My moneys on the cab. The problem with the Ampeg 8x10 is that it hasn't changed in like 60 years. Im sorry to break it to Ampeg, but times change, and the music world is changing constantly to keep up with the vast styles of music today.
The problem is that it's range of frequency isn't the best. If you look at musicians friend, it lists the Ampeg with a frequency response from 58Hz-5KHz. In comparison, looking at the Basson 8x10 on the same website, the frequency is 28Hz-5KHz. As you can see, 28Hz is a lot lower frequency that 58Hz, almost half! Your going to get a lot more low end from the basson. Im not trying to put Ampeg down, but there are other cabs out there that can do what its doing, only a lot better.

The Basson also weighs 220 lbs. And quite frankly, after my experiences with the SVT 410HLF, I don't think i would ever want a cab that can do 28 hz. Killer cab, but way too much muddy low end for my tastes.

BTW, the Ampeg 810 has undergone a couple changes since 60 years ago (more like 40), the most drastic being the switch from a straightback to a slanted back. But it's also had several drivers over the years as well. But it's still the most popular bass cab in history, so why should they mess with a good thing? Let other companies mess with it. Leave my Ampeg cabs alone!
