I can't say enough about Todd. He is a great teacher, mentor and friend. I learned a lot from him. Doug Weiss is there too, as well as Kermit Driscoll, so you really have a few great reasons as a bass player to go to Purchase right there.

Pete, you've been around long enough to know my rap on this issue.The first important learning tool in terms of learning tunes is to be old enough to have been around when the particular tune was possible...I fall under that heading. Another one is to have been un-lucky or lucky enough to have worked with a lotta singers....you can tell where i'm going with this, no?
LEARN THE LYRICS. You can Google most tunes.....As a matter of fact, Ed Fuqua and my own self started a whole thread with everyone throwing titles of tunes at me. Of course, my test was to come up with the words to many pieces of S*** tunes imaginable.

For me, launching into the Abersold material has helped me a great deal...the ear training, the scale and arpeggio practice...singing with the CD's in the car, playing chords and melodies on the piano....just concentrating on all the basic building blocks and trying to make them all second-hand.
Maybe this sort of approach isn't appropriate to your skill level. That I don't hear dominant chords as boring vanilla chords yet probably means I'm not helping you and anyone else here much sorry. Also, I still rely on singing stuff until I find something I like and then producing it on the bass when I "improvise" too. I'm not very confident yet. Worse, I'm not a pro and don't have pro ambitions...it's my hobby.
Still, I'm pretty happy with the gains I've made so far, and over time I can tell I'm able to pick up just about any song much faster than I used to and am able to feel more and more satisfied with my contributions.
