tuning machines "backwards" ?

on my mij precision thinline I just imported from japan, the tuners seem "backwards" they're 4 on a side in typical fender fashion, but you have to turn them clockwise to increase the pitch. every other bass I have you turn them counter-clockwise to increase the pitch. at first I thought they might have had the strings wound wrong, but that's not the case. what's up here--it's driving me nuts!

Fender vintage (reissue) tuners are indeed reverse. It takes a bit of adjustment, but I kinda like it now.

Yep. The popular MIM Classic series also have the reverse tuners. I forget occasionally while tuning but it's not really a big issue for me.

Can't you just take the strings off and then wind them back up the other direction?

no--then the strings are not in-line w/ the nut slot if they wind on the other side of the post

apparently vintage tuners do this, which in fact these are--just threw me for a loop at first.

I've got an old Hipshot D-tuner that's reversed. The other 3 gears are regular, it drives me nuts sometimes! It is normal though, don't stress it.

Must you remove the neck from the CIJ P's to access the truss rod? I know this is the case for the MIA '62 P RI.

They were all like that when I started in the 60's.. I put the reverse style Gotoh vintage ones on my jazz. I love 'em----"righty-tighty...lefty-loosey" ----Makes sense to me!

Yes!! The new ones are the reverse tuners!
