Double Bass tutti bass oslo philharmonic audition

Hey Guys,
G-force, you have to forgive me-I got a PM from a guy named "Glenn Goodbar" and assumed it was you. I'm an old timer and don't know how these boards even work. It is also quite possible that I gave out my password last week after responding to an email from someone saying it was necessary that I do so. I've been monitoring the board for spurious posts-so far so good.

Could someone explain how to change my password? I'm clueless.

By the way, your rather mean-spirited comment about Dutch schools left me quite upset about the future-I mean the Finns are are now dissing (is that the right word?) the Dutch? What gives?

As far as the new dutch school I I can say with almost 100% certainty that we are not big fans of it . Indifferent is a better word.
I know little of it.

Glenn

glenn -

i humbly, and with enormous respect for both you and our instrument, am very curious to know more about your and your section's ambivalence toward the new dutch school and/or fifths tuning. i am an intermediate-level player in an amateur/semi-professional orchestra, and recently, out of necessity (i don't have a bass with a c-extension, nor do i own a 5 string) i've had to play a few passages scordatura in order to get to the low c.

in the process of trying to figure out how best to do this, i came across a few sites describing new dutch school and c-g-d-a tuning. at first, i was extremely skeptical. lately, however, i've been flirting with it on my off hours, and i have to say that it makes playing some difficult passages (the storm section and final movement of Beeth. 6 for example) really manageable, and even fun to approach.

though i am an older student, i have ambition to study in the coming year at a european conservatory and eventually be a professional orchestra player. i am not in any way considering adopting the new dutch school; i realize it would - at least at this point - dramatically marginalize my hopes of being taken seriously as a player. nevertheless, i am genuinely curious about why this is so... why is there such a stigma? its devotees claim it sonically opens up the instrument (i cannot yet attest to this), extends the range of the instrument, and minimizes (at least in the case of the few pieces i've fooled around with) some fingering challenges.

thanks so much in advance for your opinion.

ps - i have also posted this message in the technique section, and have pmed you. i would of course welcome anyone else's opinion on this; i am particularly curious about the professional orchestral players' perspective.

Nobody got the job, right?
I almost went but realized a couple of weeks before the audition would take place that I wouldn't do a very good job, even by my own standards. Considering that someone as capable as this guy I know didn't get the job implies that perhaps I was right to save the 3,000nok travel expenses. I'll just practice like hell until next opportunity comes around. AND I've gotten myself a piano part for Koussevitzky, for orchestra tuning. I just hate playing excerpts on solo tuning.

Really? No winner?
Glenn, did Oslo Phil also lose some sponsorship for this season?

No Sadly to say . There were 16 who showed up though.

AS far as I know we haven't lost any sponsorship. The orchestra will be renogotiating our sponsor contract in a couple of years. That's it. Sponsorship here is a small part of our economy as opposed to the USA let's say where state support is small instead.

Our next audition will be most likely next fall. Most likely two positions, solo and tutti.

PLease don't ask me any details about out decisions as I am not allowed to discuss the latest decision.
