I'll have to draw stuff with CAD to see everything sums up well...Sounds like a good plan, but make sure that the pole-pieces align with the strings when you move the pickups towards the bridge. There isn't a lot of magnet out beyond the limits of the poles in mudbucker pickups, so you might find you get a weak E and G string response (especially the E) from your pickups. Those Artec mudbuckers do have broader pole spacing, and the Dimarzio Will Power mudbucker is similarly stanced wider than a Dimarzio Model One.
I'm going to break the SG "mudbucker" sound by changing the position. I'll move the pickup positioning on both towards the bridge, just a few inches. I've just not made up my mind yet about the final position. The pickups are an old MIJ Gibson/Epi for the right handed and a new Artec humbucker for the lefty.
My neck carve process is usually as follows: first I hog off excess wood with a belt sander. Then I use a rasp to refine the shape, then file, sand paper and a scraper. I don't think I do anything special, just go with my intuition. I prefer chunkier neck profiles.
Purpleheart only stays purple for a short time. Soon it will turn brown(ish).
I built a solid purpleheart guitar 14 years ago. The purpleheart is brown when you cut it. Exposed to air it turned purple. I finished it with clear, and it's still the same purple. I have unfinished chunks left that turned purple and stayed purple.
I have been thinking of putting the PU more or less where you have it in your build. I'll think about what you suggesti also moved the position about one inch away from the neck. afterwards i wish i would have moved it some more because the only way to get some mid growl out of this bass is to hit the strings hard near the bridge or tweak the amp.
here's my build: Les Paul JR DC EB-0 Short Scale Bass
check out the gene simmons les paul bass with the mudbucker positioned way closer to the bridge:
I have purple heart in my Grabber inspired build, have to take photos periodically to see the difference with time...I built a solid purpleheart guitar 14 years ago.
