I've ended up with a simple (to me) control setup:
Two ungrounded MN blends and a 1M passive tone pot.
I used alligator clips to temporarily connect each blend pot to ground, then tested all different combinations (both grounded, neither grounded, blend A grounded but not B, blend B grounded but not A).
Grounding the blends allowed for a more complete separation of the pickups, but at the cost of lots of bite and character.
I snipped the blend pot ground wires and called it done.

- Blend A pans between the neck pickup and the output of Blend B
- Blend B pans between the middle and bridge pickups
