Two vintages basses....crying in pain

Well, My son is under a year old... he just gets to play with a 25$ Ukulele at this point. I've allowed a 10 year old to play my Gibson LP's supervised durring lessons. His parents got him an Epi after he proved he could play some chords..

It is Just an Instrument... but for those of us who love the craft, I get why it'd bug ya.

"earning the right" for the thing would be getting something other than a softshell gigbag for the instruments, and being a little protective of them. I can understand the "it's just stuff" mentality, I'm still quite surprised that my father lets me play his Gibson SG on occasion (I'm no Gibson fan, but it's a VERY nice guitar) but it seems like it's no big deal to him, however this is "stuff" that bears significance to us - these are essentially the "holy grail" of basses, they've become sacred in the "bassist's religion" almost, it'd be almost like some rich kid getting the mona lisa and drawing a moustache on it because "it's just a painting" (I'm fully aware that someone did actually do so with a copy, I mean the original painting), it is JUST a painting, but it's not JUST a painting, this is THE painting. Same thing goes for the rick and the fender, it's JUST a bass, but it's not JUST a bass.

Wow...there sure are a lot of Holy Grails out there - hahaha

Meh....if I own an old P or Ric, and I wanna light it on fire....

....that's my right as it's owner.

So if said owner wants to use a gigbag or carry it around wrapped in a garbage bag...that's his right too.

Question is...what gives YOU the right to tell him any different?

Some people give way too much credit to these old instruments.

Except that the Mona Lisa original is one of a kind.

There are lots of 70's P's and Ricks.

Also, if they were both "pristine", and from the sounds of it the kid uses them often(often enough for the singer to comment on the tone of the bass not being used that night), it seems he's doing no damage whatsoever, and looking after them quite well.

I can't really see the issue.

Your argument hold no water - These are mass produced instruments. The Mona Lisa is one of a kind.

There are museum quality vintage instruments that rarely get played and then there is everything else. Who cares.

I'm with you on that some people give too much cred. to these instruments. You're also right with "who am I to tell him any different", who am I? it's HIS stuff, if he wants to use it, that's his business. It's also my business if I want to say "wow, I'm surprised he's actually using that!". If I want to call you insane for lighting a rick on fire, that's also my right, and I'm just saying that this instrument holds special value to a lot of people, and there are some who would probably treat it better. That's it, no need to get your panties in a bunch.

I'm sorry, but those are not particularly valuable basses and are only worth a little more than the cost of respective new ones. Now if the kid had dragged out a sonic blue 1960 Jazz bass then I could see your concern... :)

This thread is funny! My stuff included. I guess what set me off was the "earn the right" thing. Me personally, I wouldn't want either of these basses. They're just not my style. With that being said, I've been gigging on and off since I was 14 (I'm 33 now). I played with some kids that had nice gear and some that had pawn shop specials. All the folks that I've played with took good care of their gear, cheap or expensive. I'v never once thought, "This kid doesn't deserve that old Gold top LP" or "If he's gonna play like that, he might as well throw that Tobias in the trash". It's always been, "Damn, that's a nice instrument. I'd like to have one".

Who cares if someone else can appreciate it more....then they can go out an buy their own....trust me, there are tons and tons of 'em....nothing rare about 70's P's and Rics.

I've seen rusty Mustangs in backyards...too bad, so sad for Mustang lovers. (myself being one)

My point is...some people don't give a crap about old P's and Rics....and if they happen to own one and want to run over it with their car....no one should open their yap about it....essentially they do not have the right to say anything.

I disagree, we have every right to say anything, I wouldn't have told the kid "hey, you don't deserve that bass", and I'm not even going to say he doesn't have a right or that he has to "earn" it -the only thing he needs to earn is the money to buy it- but it does seem he may not appreciate it. and I know a LOT of kids my age (and younger) who get their $5,000 plus rigs from mommy and daddy's fat paychecks -and barely know how to take care of them, let alone play them (though there are those who own them and CAN play them), and I must say quite frankly that I am jealous and quite p.o.ed at their snobbery and lack of appreciation for their affluence. My argument was probably a lot of that jealousy coming out, but I'm still gonna say that really wanting a rick (but not having any real money to throw around on one), I'm jealous, and if I had one of those I'd treat it like it were gold.

To the OP, I'm with you to a point. I think what you're saying is that you'd probably be impressed, and have a different attitude if you could have had an intelligent conversation with the kid about his gear. Instead, he's got the classic high school kid strap, and has no idea what he has. That's the problem. He has no idea what kind of history he's hammering on. I remember when I started playing around that age. My dad would never let me play his good stuff until I proved I could take care of my own stuff, and that I was serious about playing. He bought me a cheap Ibanez and an amp, and I loved it. Learned, got decent, and gained the trust of my dad when it came to this type of stuff. I was serious, I wanted to play, and I had respect for it. I can't say the kid you're talking about doesn't have respect for it, or doesn't take it seriously. And they aren't super rare basses, but c'mon no one can deny them being nice, quality, basses, that most people here would also be jealous of, even if they say they aren't. And would definitely think twice when seeing a kid dragging them around. You all say "it's his stuff", but you KNOW you'd think twice about it if you were there. I think most of all, if anyone else here saw this, they'd be more concerned about the well being of the basses! They should be in hardshells!
