Typical effects for fretless?

fretless sounds great dry if you sound great!!!

also, fretless sounds great with ANY effects, if you and the effect sound great!!!

i have been playing fretless lately with jojo, and the additional intonation challenge is well worth the expressive/sonic potential of fretless for the stuff i do in nerve.

but, like double bass, you have to really work hard, and play in tune... that is a serious undertaking! if you're going to play fretless, do it well, and use any effects you want!

Delay is very nice, fuzz, filter, od and comp.

And reverb I still haven't found anything that has spellbound me yet (and since I am not a live player I most often add that in the computer when I have recorded what I need so the need hasn't yet been that urge to me).

I know this is wayyyyy of the mark and mostly unhelpful but really a Musicman HD130 is a nice sounding amp with a killer verb tank and is great for bass, also a stand alone reverb tank works well too.

As for digi I like Lexicon's stuff.

Yeah, prolly a spring tank will find it's way to me some day, for digital stuff, I've been looking at this unit lately:

I have at my disposal, a Tascam mp3 Bass Trainer that has effects elements as well as predefined effects chains. There are some 'cool' effects combinations to try out (eq, dist, flange, chorus, phaser, octave, wah etc).

I mostly play my fretless basses clean, maybe a lil compression if needed. Though for the cool "classic" fretless sounds for you to experiment with, go with an octaver, chorus/flanger, compression, reverb and you'll pretty soon see you can have a great deal of fun with that for a start..

My weapons of choice for doin that, would (so far) be:

Octavers
Boss OC-2, EHX Micro Pog, I like them both, they are different birds and good at different things.

Chorus
Danelectro Cool Cat, Killer chorus!

Flanger
Danelectro Hash Browns, Nice vintage feel flanger

Compressor
Aphex Punch Factory, It just does the job, no questions asked
Art Tube Levelar, I swapped out the factory tube for a lil cleaner tube (dont remember the name etc.) that gives more gain and less noise, great compressor this one too!

Larry Kimpel sold me on the Robotalk. It sounds good on the fretted, but [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] about 2/3 of the way in and see why I tried it with a fretless as soon as I could.

Same here, my delay is a Malekko Echo-600 with expression pedal.

Oh, a Fulltone OCD as well (for flavor.)

I use a Radial Tonebone Master Loop Controller to control these.

So, the friend of the OP will only play fretless with a flanger? My more jaundiced and cynical side would inject that's probably because the flanger includes a good bit of pitch smearing, so it's less obvious that the friend is playing out of tune!
