I’m tall with long fingers and used to try to follow Billy Sheehan’s 1 finger per fret method all over the neck. Now that I’ve been playing over 30 years and play 3 to 4 hour gigs, I choose comfort and ease over everything else. Given the choice, I’ll shift away from the 1-4 frets, on the A,D, & G strings, and go up the neck for the same notes on the bigger strings. I prefer the fatter tone anyways and of course, the spread is not a stretch at all. I also find myself using the index, middle, and pinky fingers for 3 fret patterns to negate the need for the stretching that is often needed when using the ring finger.
I also rarely play my heavier basses for more than a few songs, switching back to my 7 to 8.5 pound basses. In the end, I’m happier, playing more relaxed, and hurting way less, especially the next day, and that transfers into the music and makes the gig more fun for everyone.
