Does anyone else dig the VFL tone? They are a skosh brighter at max yet sound smooth to my ears.

The ones i played sounded good...the Peavey branded pickups in my 90s Foundation 5 sound good too...Peavey USA were great pickups overall.
Opening up this Peavey VFL bass pickup. Here is a shot of the preamp and the chip running things

Could not save the cover. This batch of pickups has a different material than the SF and Slant. This stuff is super gummy and does not machine well. The material also has very fine wire mesh imbedded in it that creates splinters when trying to get the coils out. It's a mess. This will be the only VFL I'm talking apart. Here's a shot of the coils after cutting the cover off

I would rather have powerful passive pickups.
it’s the preamp. The part that makes it active. EQ, level boost, buffering. All kinds of tricks.
Dumber question.. why not just put it on the preamp?

That IS the preamp. Active pickups have preamps onboard. There are active BASSES with passive pickups, feeding a preamp. There are active pickups feeding passive controls. There are active pickups feeding preamp. Different flavors.
Yes, my 1985 Guild Pilot bass came stock with an active EMG P pickup and a passive tone control.
That's the B-Ninety Active, Forum Plus, Foundation-S Active, RSB-Bass.
I've also wondered why in the pickup or guitar and not a pedal or in the amp. I've wondered why due to a few reasons but the main one is that any op amp that can run on a 9v battery for a chunk of time is not going to be a premium Op Amp. In order to run a op amp worth running there would need to be power from the wall and not a battery. Also chip rolling could be possible. Players get nice basses , Valve amps , etc and to have a 2c op amp in the mix seems backwards. If a off board active option was available one could have a discreet Op Amp .

After refurbishing a lot of HiFi gear and upgrading components the reality and importance of component selection is important to sound. Seeing a preamp smaller than a stick of gum running on a battery is as exciting as a clock radio vs something like McIntosh
No it won't but then the rubes have no idea the op amp cost 2 cents, a $150+ price tag is enough to convince them it's a savvy consumer choice
