One got away.... first year Peavey Fury.

I'm kind of glad I didn’t have the winning bid...at least that’s what I’ve been telling myself since 12:30 this afternoon....I’m not quite convinced yet.... I think :thumbsdown:

I’ve never played a Fury. For some reason I thought they came after the Foundations. Late 80s would have been my guess. Is that a Fury there? This one looks a bit like one of the T models at first glance, or at least the same vintage as the Foundation basses. Hell I even owned a T60 6 string and I’m still not educated on their bass lines. I’m embarrassed to admit the models (and even brands) that I have yet to play.

Thank you. I can’t believe I was even considering selling this. (It was going to be to my brother, so if I really expressed regret he’d let me buy it back) I bought this around 5 years ago, and the strings were already older without that new string zing. I’m not sure exactly what strings are on it. Some kind of medium gauge Nickel wound I assume. They have a really nice smooth vintage thump going on so I haven’t felt the need to change them. I love the way this bass sounds. I can get a McCartney late 60s chunk, a Geezer Butler groove, or whatever after. It’s a fun one to play. I feel like I could play with Zappa sometimes when I put it on me.

This is a friend of mine, so if anyone is interested, I'm sure he could have it shipped to you. Great deal. He keeps his basses in above par condition. I KNOW he took this one apart to the bone, polished and cleaned every little part, then reassembled it, and did a set up.

It sold for $345 plus $60 shipping.
That might seem high, but it was played possibly twice and then put in the original HS case and then under the bed since new (according to the seller...and the pix seem to back it up). G.A.S. can be such a PITA. :meh:

So I have decided it's time to give the old foundation an overhaul The pots are crackly and no amount of contact cleaner has helped. The jack is unreliable. Not to mention everything is just plain old old. 35 years or so. I tried contacting Peavey and unsurprisingly everything has been discontinued. So I have a couple questions for you experts.

  • Can I just order 2- A250k ohm and 1- B250k Ohm split long shaft pots? Will pretty much any work?
  • Is the Jack mono or stereo? I assume mono. I know it's thick panel are there different lengths
  • Does the voltage of the caps matter? I see 50v, 100v and more. I assume 50v is more than enough.

  • Yes, good pots will work as long as they have the same resistance and linearity.
  • The jack is mono. Pickups generate alternative current and it only uses 2 wires for this.
  • The amount of voltage is way below 1v and measures in mV, actually, so 50v is more than enough. The rating is due to the fact that caps offer a bit of resistance and that, above a certain voltage, it can generate enough heat to make it smoke or burn :)

Awesome! Thank you for the help! Should I look for lower voltage caps? Are there lower voltage caps?

The tone pot is a S curve/taper. Peavey used these for the spin a split on the T series and continued to use them on pretty much everything until they ran out of stock. Just get another audio taper for the tone pot, as linear/B taper doesn't do tone very well.
However, Linear tapers work great for volumes on a VVT harness, they offer a little more precise, blendable range. When my Foundation had the bridge volume pot go out, I replaced it with a push/pull pot to configure the pickups for series/parallel. It gets another usable tone out of the bass-and a thick tone it is! Super Ferrites do really well in series.

If you can find lower voltage caps, that works, but 50v is easily found and they are usually pretty small and easy to install.

Also, pay close attention to the fact the the red wire is hot/black is ground on one pickup, and red is the ground/black is hot on the other! It's weird, but it's how Peavey did the RW/RP noise cancelling thing.

I was actually kind of curious about the linear pots for the volumes. It seems like the internet generally agrees to go that way. I just thought I would follow the schematic. I may do the linear though. I think I may go linear for volume and audio for the tone.

The Fury I bought off Reverb arrived today. It is almost pristine. Unfortunately the boys at Sam Ash did me a "favor" by removing the flats that were on it and installing a new set of D'Adarrio XL's. I dug around in the used string collection and found a set of TI flats in great shape. They will go on the bass when I have time to clean and polish it. I have the kind of week musicians dream of and dread when they arrive. I have 6 gigs and a rehearsal this week. Lots of music to learn for a church gig Sunday so not much time to spend detailing a bass.

The Fury sounds great and plays just wonderful. It has a one piece neck, a solid white pickguard and a maple fingerboard...I prefer the 2 piece Peavey neck, W/B/W pickguard and rosewood fingerboard. However, for what I paid for it I really can't complain. It is a perfectly good little P bass for about half the cost of a used Squier.

I've been watching them for months. Most of them are beat up and going for $250-$350. Well, at least that is the price they are asking for them. Just keep watching and a jewel will pop up. Now I am watching for a nice condition Generation 1 TL5. This might be a very long wait.
