Do what my parents did: make me buy them myself. I never lost a phone (allthough I always buy the cheap ones and abuse them enough to make them last just a year 
)

Not even as a joke, I totally agree with this. Seems like the best course of action by far.

Don't buy him a phone, let him buy his own.
That's the only way my stepdaughter gets one.
Nothing teaches a kid to respect other's property like having to actually replace their own (OUT OF THEIR OWN POCKET) when they lose it due to their own ignorance or laziness.
Also, if he's on your plan, whatever it costs you per month, make him pay for it - even if the phone is gone, because the phone company does not care, you pay that additional line whether he has the phone or not.

That's an exaggeration, obviously, but a little fear goes a long way. A LOT of fear is a very VERY bad thing.

Cellphones are a luxury.
If your child is too young to hold a part-time job, then he/she doesn't need a phone. Social networking at age 10?
If your child is old enough to get a part time job, then he/she should be paying for it out of their own pocket.
Either way, under no circumstances should you be paying for your child's cellphone(s). Luxuries are earned, not given away.
You already bought him 2 phones too many. did he EARN that phone? Or did he whine for one? I know too many that just whine.
Yeah....I'll go with the "don't give him a phone" and "make him buy his own". If it's something that you're using so you can get in touch with him when you need to, get him a pager.
BS. My dad bought me my cellphone, in fact, he's bought all the phones I've had (all three
) ánd pays my plan. The one I have now I've had since november '08 and even though it's not in pristine condition anymore I'm certainly not careless. I got this one after the battery of my previous phone (which I had for a good 4/5 years) crapped out.
I work my ass off and damn near everything I own came out of my own pocket, the phone was a gift because my parents feel the money I would spend on the phone would come to a better use put in the bank, saving up for when I move out and such.
Yeah if your kid is irresponsible, you should make them buy their own phones.
But if your kid's responsible, why not?
Depending on how old your kid is, I'd consider not even replacing it.
However, I'd recommend doing what my parents did to me when I got my first phone:
First phone was a Christmas gift, they paid for the service until I had a job that could pay for my $10.00 additional line. If I lost the phone, I still paid for the service and had to pay for my replacement phone. I didn't get new phones when they were cool, I got them when Verizon said I could get a new one free.
Needless to say, I'm not on their plan anymore, and eight years later, I got off my parents' plan and got my own. In that time, I NEVER lost a phone, and only broke one once... when that occurred, I used an old phone from years past until I could get my new one free.
It taught me to be responsible... everything is so much more valuable to kids when they busted their own butt and spent their own money on it.
