UGH!!!!! KIDS

I honestly doubt he will stop loosing phones just because you make him pay for it. At least I know I wouldn't treat the phone any differently if I did. Just teach him to always have his phone in his left pocket of his jeans, or his nightstand when sleeping. That way the phone won't leave his pocket unless he has to use it.

Which would solve the problem without resorting to drastic measures.

Parenting advice from a kid who's daddy buys him phones? Good grief!

An ignorant response from a guy who's too lazy to check profiles :hyper:

I bought my own computer, I bought my own tv, I buy my own clothes, I buy my own basses.. Do you know who's going to pay for my college next year? I am.

Don't try to portray me as a spoiled brat because my dad buys me a phone every 5 years or so, I work my ass off every day on a minimum wage job to get my butt through college.

Easy now. I never said you were spoiled so I'm not sure who you're trying to convince. It just seemed ironic to me that kids are giving parenting advice.

From a parent:

Make him pay for it. My daughter has a phone, not because she wanted one (she did), but because I want to be able to reach her when I feel it's necessary. As I told her "your phone is for my convenience, not yours."

Just because most parents are unable to take advice from their own children, being set on them knowing what is best, doesn't me what we have to say is unreasonable, illogical or unsound. This being a forum, perhaps the parents will be more open to "the kids'" input.

So you had your daughter pay for your convenience? Or did you get the first sentence wrong? :p Anyway, that is pretty much why I was given my first phone.

Cellphones are a luxury.

If your child is too young to hold a part-time job, then he/she doesn't need a phone. Social networking at age 10?

If your child is old enough to get a part time job, then he/she should be paying for it out of their own pocket.

Either way, under no circumstances should you be paying for your child's cellphone(s). Luxuries are earned, not given away.

I was 12 when I got my first phone. When it broke (it was a ****** phone) I paid for it's replacement. I think it was a good age to get one, I'm not obsessed with texting... IMO that happens when you give a kid a phone too early.

But yeah

Well, you do indeed sound like a reasonable young guy. A lot of kids aren't though. I doubt you would expect your dad to keep replacing phones if you lost them. I guess that was my point. At my age, I'm paying for my Mom's cell phone. Funny how things go around in circles.

Read your post again, you specifically called out the fact that my father gave me my phone, thus I should not be giving advice.
Which I obviously don't agree with. Also due to the fact that my whole post was a comment to CrispyDelicious' statement that "under no circumstances should you be paying for your child's cellphone(s)." Which I think is way too narrowminded, because (as I stated) some kids/teens do have a good sense of value and a sense of responsibility. Just because my father bought me my phone doesn't mean I know the value of it any less than friends of mine who buy a new phone every 2 to 3 months just because the new phone 'looks cooler'.

And please stop referring to me as 'a kid', I'm old enough to drink, drive, serve my country and vote, heck I'm old enough to run for government.
