Uke Bass Strings - Is rubber the only option?

I had a Kala UBass and found it fun but the strings were so meh that I stopped playing it. I'd like to get some form of small bass for easy travel and TV-time strumming (why not, eh?). Is there any other option to the funky rubber strings for a uke size bass? They likely won't come on the bass but I'd get them at the same time.

If there is a thread on this that I couldn't find, please point me that way!

It appears there are those funky rubber strings and also the option of metal wrapped nylon in round and flat wound. Anything with a metal core would require a modification to the instrument to deal with the increased string tension, set up or otherwise. You could try al dente linguine or braided vermicelli.

As was mentioned, the Kala/Galli round wound and flatwound metal over nylon core, comes in 21" and 23" scale. After 9 years of playing bass uke and going through most of the polyurethane strings, the Kala/Galli flatwounds are the only ones I use now. I think Pyramid also has choices.

I will second the Kala Metal Round Wound Kohanmike mentioned. I have a Savanah solid body fretless and these things really bring it to life.
