Has anyone tried one of these? I placed an order for one because I'm really intrigued by the design. I have owned a lot of P Basses over the years, I always end up selling them because I can't ever seem to get one that is really balanced sounding across all 4 strings (and I mean even vintage 60's basses I've had the chance to play)...what I find is that the E and A strings will be fat and powerful sounding, but I can never get the D and G strings to really match them. The treble side of the pickup can be raised of course and those strings will then be LOUDER, but still sound thin compared to the lower strings.
I've built a couple of instruments where I flipped the treble side of the pickup so that it is in front of the lower half and that works pretty well. the D and G strings pick up a lot more fundamental that way.
Howard says he designed this pickup for exactly the reasons I mentioned and that it does indeed fatten up those top strings. I can't find a bass with these installed anywhere so I have to wait until mine shows up..."The waiting is the hardest part" - Tom Petty
