underated overrated bassists

I agree that Jaco is overrated, and yes, I have listened and listened trying to hear what the legend is all about...no doubt an excellent player, but his status as a "bass god" is lost on me.

Context is everything. If you look at bass playing before and after Jaco, it is easier to see his contribution. I forget who said it, but two quotes that help put it into context; "There is bass playing before Jaco and bass playing after Jaco" and "Jaco opened the door and we all walked through."

+1 on Sir McCartney being underrated as a bass player, also i think Christopher Wolstenholme of MUSE is a really good rock bassist and probably underrated. Robert DeLeo is underrated as well. Yea i mainly listen to rock music so i am speaking only on that genre.:bassist:

You could say the same about John Entwistle. There is bass playing before The Ox and there is bass playing after The Ox!

Underrated- John Deacon from Queen (I know, I know, listen to the Millionaire Waltz, anything from the first 4 albums or their back catalogue... Seriously underrated imo) also I reckon Pino Palladino's pretty underrated considering how amazing he is and innovative with the fretless.

Overrated- Pete Wentz, he plays some of the simplest lines in popular music and somehow can't stay in the pocket. Also I'm pretty sure he plays all the strings at once (mutes three and frets one). Maybe Sid Vicious, though I don't know if anyone ever considered him good. There's this guy on youtube called Jon Paul (I think) and I'm pretty sure most of the people who watch his videos don't play bass, he's decent but he chooses a crap pop song and then completely hijacks them and plays some really flashy solos that don't fit at all. If he played it in a band he would probably be kicked out in a few minutes. I have no problem with stuff like that, as long as it's done tastefully (Michael Manring or Zander Zon).

No from what i have been able to find and watch he is a great soloist who happens to use a bass. I think anything he plays would turn to gold. But i try to judge a bass player by what they bring to a band. I think a great bass player makes the music and people around him better (jamerson). But Jaco from what i have seen is just the whole show with every one else trying to support him.

Sorry if i came off wrong!

I love that you said this. Most underrated is Aston Barrett. How much did he bring to the music with just a few notes!!!!

As others have said, pick up Heavy Weather ASAP. Not just to hear Jaco in a way you may not have before, but it is just a wonderful album. Zawinul, Shorter, Jaco, Acuna, Badrena = Magic! Dang it, I'm going to go listen to it myself now.

Seriously. When I first heard this record back then, I almost died. I don't think I had ever heard anything quite like it. Probably Jaco's best work with weather report.

heavy Weather
night passage
Mr. Gone

Those are the "must have" Jaco/weather report albums.

Hmmm. Underrated: Geezer Butler, Frank Bello, John Deacon, Paul Simonan, Dennis Dunnaway, Fat Mike, Matt Freeman, Robert Trujillo (Suicidal Tendencies/Infectious Grooves years)
Not going to do an overrated one because anyone I put there would be able to play circles around me.

About Jaco-

Some people may not care for his tone and the way he plays, but that does not make him overrated.

For instance, I went through a period where I listened to Jaco a lot. I loved it, then I got tired of it. Now my favorite bass player is T-Bone Wolk, who grooves a lot more simply.

I almost can't stand to listen to Jaco anymore; I'm just tired of his playing and his tone. That doesn't mean he's over-rated! He was a genius!

Flea overrated? His bank balance would suggest otherwise.

he's a good performer and a good bassist but very overrated.

How is a guy that has his own signature bass underrated?

If you have a signature instrument it just means you are marketable..... I mean Avril Lavigne has a a signature telecaster.... 'nuff said

IMHO

underrated: Krist Novoselic, Robbie Merril, Norm Stockton and John Paul Johns
