Underpowered Ashdown/Avatar Rig

You could always get a power amp and run that in to the cab (s) using the MAG as a pre amp. that way you could go very loud if you ever needed to and you would also reduce the chance of running in to distortion on the MAG

Could you give me some more information about this? That sounds like a good option instead of buying another head and bi-amping. How powerful can the power amp be when using the MAG as a pre-amp?

Ive not tried it but was going to do the same with my ABM head.
you take a line level out (i believe) from the MAG, i guess you could use the effects send or tuner out and run that in to one channel of the power amp, then hook your cab to the power amp. you are only limited by the output of the power amp and what your speaker can handle
As an example if you got a Crown XLS 402 amp this would give you 300watts in to your 8 ohms cab using just the one channel but 900watts bridged mono (where both channels run as one). if you got the cheaper XLS 202 you would get 600watts bridged mono in to your 8 ohms cab
This to me would be the cheapest route but this is only giving you more power. if you go the extra cab route you would of course be changing your sound and you may prefer that.

Bell,

What impedence is you're lone SB112 rated at? If its only 8ohms, you're not getting the full 300w's.... I believe MAG300's are rated at 300w @ 4 ohms. At 8ohms, you'll probably be getting around 180-200w.

So, adding a 2nd SB112 would accomplish two things, if my hunch is correct.

1) Increase the output on your amp
2) Increase the cone surface, moving the air.

BOTH of those things will help resolve your dilemma.

Ican say from experience that going to a 4ohms speaker wont make a huge difference to what you have now.
I went from using my MAG 300 C-115 8 ohms speaker with my ABM300 head to a Schroeder 1210 and although there was a difference it was more the speaker type that made a difference. 220watts to 307 watts is ver small loudnes wise and you dont really want to be running the MAG past 4 o'clock as you will get distortion and could then damage the speaker (unlikely though)
Adding a second speaker will of course increase your volume but then you may have a balance issue if one speaker is louder than the other

My point was, that adding cone surface AND watts... is would be the result of adding a 2nd 8ohm cab. Not so much, that it's the best solution.

IMHO, he should add the 2nd cab, see if he's happy... Then decided to add a more power afterwards if he's not.
