underrated bassists

Graham Maby from Joe Jackson and Leigh Gorman from the 80's band Bow Wow Wow. Both are monster pick players who propelled their respective bands to popularity without compromising their styles in the process. As a matter of fact, it was their styles that made their bands so good, imho.

Couldn't agree more - that sound on Is She Really Going Out With Him? makes the song - percussive and cool. The late 70's saw some other great British bassists - notably Norman Watt-Roy with the Blockheads and Bruce Thomas with Elvis Costello, IMHO.

+1 on Karl Alvarez.
Check out the Lemonheads self titled album from 2007 for even more Karl Alvarez basswork.

My all time favorite bass playing from karl alvarez has to be the instrumentals they put on all the Descendents and All albums. Listen to the end of the Descendents "ALL" album to hear some of the most killer bass and drums. punk/jazz/rock-n-frikkin-roll

That's what I'm talking about! Probably my 2nd favorite musician period, next to John Paul Jones. He's not underrated, just under-recognized (the mask years didnt help). He's got a great website if you've never been there, with some great bass and gear info and the story behind the Dead Goon bassline. According to the site he's also got a new "smart rock" project in the works, should be good. Also nice to see Billy Gould get some love, faith no more's sound would have been an anemic mess with a lesser bass player.

This has been done many times...so I am going to add some rules. If you have a bass named after you - you cant be underrated. If you are featured in advertisements for major brand bass products - you can't be underrated. So let's try again.

Mel Schaecter - Grand Funk
Jeffrey Hammond - Jethro Tull
John Deacon - Queen
