He's known for Intronaut, but he also plays jazz. As far as metal goes, he's certainly one of the most tasteful fretless players in the genre, he always knows just the right thing to play.

How about late Ronnie James Dio´s original lineup bassist JIMMY BAIN Listen to those first two albums "Holy Diver" and "Last In Line" And don´t forget early Rainbow stuff and this is top secret hysss...... They say and Jimmy himself said on the interview that he played bass on Scorpions´s "Love At First Sting" album. Listen to his pick sound, note choices and GROOVE!(and he composed and played keyboards too....)

Bobby Sheehan, R.I.P., played with Blues Traveler was a phenomenal player. Once he passed, BT was never the same. I loved the way he created alot of his lines that didn't follow the guitar. I don't think I have heard him mentioned much on here but if you get a chance, check out some of his live footage with Blues Traveler.

For me, the most underrated bass player of all time is Al McKibbon. He played as part of the Dave Brubeck Quartet for 30 years.

They played many different time signatures and keys. Sometimes, each musiciam played different time and keys in the same song at the same time.

In the history of music, there may be 3 or 4 bass players who could do what he did.

But I'll contribute. Of all the music I listen to, the bassist that best fits the "underrated" description to me is Dave Meros. Phenomenal player, but rarely gets a mention on TB even in threads like this.

I've chatted with Dave on Facebook before today, mainly about his DIY basses. He seems to be a very nice guy in general, and happy to provide technical knowledge. A monster player as well.

I would nominate Rosko Gee as underrated, as I like his playing with Can (technically a better if less idiosyncratic bassist than Holger Czukay), but I never see his name mentioned anywhere.
