Underrated bassists???

same goes for Simon Gallup, Mike Mills, Peter Hook, the guys from Ned's atomic Dustbin ... Norman Cook (i used to LOVE the housemartins) ... Colin Moulding was a genius, and unless you are 35-42 and used to skateboard, you haven't heard him probably.

Glad someone mentioned Mike Mills....love his early R.E.M. work....definitely one of the reasons I play bass...probably the only true musician in that band.

Always thought Gerry McAvoy kicked butt.
Dave Pegg
Tim Bogert
Chas Chandler
Paul Samwell-Smith

Great as he was Chas Chandler absolutely refused to even pick up a bass in the same room as this guy when they were in the studio.

If you don't like the style of what they do, fastforward to 3:20 and try to see his picking hand as anything less than a blur.
Awesome! And very definitely unrecognised!

You are so right. Chas couldn't touch this guy. Chandler's strength was just writing incredible and memorable bass lines.
However, I saw Slade (and Glass Harp) way back in the early 70's and they were seriously good! Best memory of them was when the lead guitar was soloing. He climbed up on top of his stack, played there a while, then did a full flip off the stack and landed on his feet without missing a note. Plus he was wearing platform shoes! (I didn't even know what platform shoes were, this was 72 or 73!) Now that's entertainment!

He broke his ankle doing that in Liverpool once!

I just got hold of a bootleg from that '73 tour, excellent quality for a crowd recording, I think they were supporting Eagles, or maybe J Geils Band?
Sorry for the hijack; now back to our regular schedule.

When I think underrated, the first that comes to mind is Rob DeLeo. But seeing how many others have mentioned him I see I'm far from alone thinking that. So does that make him the MOST underrated bassist?
I was also gonna say Trevor Dunn, but others have mentioned him, too.

Hmmmm, gotta come up with a new one that nobody else has...... Umm, Pete Wentz? Bahahahaha, just kidding folks.
