Unique, weird (vintage?) fender bass?

This is probably a weird question. I was originally gonna get an american standard p, seems like it would suite my needs very well, but then I realized I didnt want to be boring and get an american standard p. Is there any good quality not as well known options made by fender? Not specifically a p bass, I'd consider anything (j, p, p/j, h, hh, whatever). looking to spend around 1k.

I own a MIJ Jag and it is very versatile. Nice comfy C shape neck and cool retro looks.

If you want a bit more modern style vibe in a Fender made bass look for a Fender Prophecy bass from the early to mid 90's. I had one and wish I had hung on to it. They are getting a bit hard to find! Heartfield Guitars

Here's your problem: If you want something weird and unique (and I'm guessing, your idea of "cool"), you have to find/earn it yourself by combing through music stores, pawnshops, music gear swap meets, etc. Or ebay, I guess, but then you're buying something you haven't played or heard.

If a bunch of internet strangers like us suggest it, then it's not really weird or unique. Also, Fender has this habit of re-issuing formerly discontinued models, so something like a Mustang that used to be exceedingly rare is now a bass that you can just order from Musician's Friend (not that there's anything wrong with that, but if the OP wants unique, that's not the way to get it).

Silly question, if you think the P will fit your needs, why not get it? The other basses will not sound the same. Sounds like you are saying you don't want what you want.

Just sayin'. Ps and Js may be "boring", but so is a pickup truck or a Camry. They just work.

Well I been playing bass 57 years and I never heard such nonsense young man. I am English. I remember waiting for my first fender. I never regreated it. It wont be the bass that is boring. When the player hits that first not they are hearing you! One Fender and you change to various strings the bass changes to. You add a pedal here and there and the bass changes to! Believe me it wont be that instrument that's boring! It's a fabulous stringed instrument that deserves your respect. Think about that bass with a particular combo amp, flat wound strings (No names) a little compression and your in the mix. I have fenders 1953,56 ah a few. One would have had just for the fun of it was a Jaguar, is the the Custom? with all the switches haha! But you have to think of your bass as a tool to get the job done. So when you know your job you'll know what bass! aka ziggybass
