Unsilked strings?

Happy to hear that. You've been just lucky. The "problem" exists and the number of people talking about this should tell you something.

I play the upright -- Thomasktik Spirocores fray if you are not careful and I have been taught by my teacher 32 years ago how to avoid silk fray. If I can avoid Spirocores silk fray on the upright tuner, it's a no brainer on the electric bass, hence "Never a problem for me". I also live in New Mexico an inherently dusty place. Silk powder is the least of my worries, I would worry about dried rosin first from bowing on the upright.

Whatever it is, it can be really annoying.

but that's probably why the lighter trick works in tidying them up, causing the plastic to shrink back and not burn

Apart from DR strings (my current favourite brand), which other brands make unsilked strings?
I'm currently looking for a set of flats but I'm interested also in rounds.

I just replaced my DR black beauties, on my all black bass with Roto sound nexus black coated strings. I didnt like how rubbery the DRs felt after about a month, The rotos feel& sound better but.... they have different color "silks" for each string having a rainbow effect on your headstock! its ok if into that sort of "thing". I wish they would stick to 1 color silk! my guitarist suggested dying the silk or burning them, not that there's anything wrong with that! I just dont wanna be waving someones elses flag! Some friends have made comments on it, I just said thats how they come.not a huge deal, but it is quite noticeable!

Sorry, I misinterpreted your previous post. I guess double bass strings are all silked? Out of curiosity, how do you avoid silk fray?

I use DR Sunbeams on my Jazz bass and they're my favourite rounds for a number of reasons. I need to test the other strings they do, but I'll stick with DR for now.
If you like those Rotos, just ignore the silk color and enjoy them. I wouldn't care that much to be honest. I've used Rotos rounds for a while and never had problems with silk fray. The same is for GHS, good strings. Unfortunately I can't say the same for Fender 9050L, EB Slinkies and Cobalt flats. I liked the strings but the silk tends to fray after a while.
