While the music sounds pretty horrible to me at this point, Gary Thain from Uriah Heep back in the day was quite amazing... clean and precise and creative. He was a great player IMO.

Also, from a totally different genre... Ralphe Armstrong doesn't get near enough credit for being one of the 'founding fathers of fusion bass' IMO.

Finally, Jimmie Johnson is just amazing, and never seems to get the 'bass hero' reputation of some others. His work with Flim and the BB's way back when was groundbreaking IMO ('smooth jazz' before it became so smarmy), and he BURNS with Allan Holdsworth. On top of that, he is one of the most tasty pop/rock bassists out there... his work with James Tayler (especially the double live disc with Carlos Vega on drums) is IMHO among the best pop bass playing of all time.

Greg Lake
Actually I am surprised that he wasn't mentioned but thats the unsung part I guess. Saw him play with ELP in '77 or so and he was great!

Leo Lyons
Saw him play with Ten Years After in about '75. Maybe not a bass hero but he was a very good rock and roll bass player. It was a fun show. They did 5 encores, the last one was after a few hundered of us would not leave. The crew had already started tearing down and had set things back for the last song.

Mark Andes... Didn't he play in Jo Jo Gunne with his brother Matt ? Jo Jo Gunne great band. I have a sealed copy of there first LP(Vinyl baby).

I have only been hanging at the bottom end for about 6 mos now, but it has changed how I listen to (and hear) everything; both new material and things I have known for 30+ years.

John Wetton (King Crimson, UK, Asia, etc)
Mike Mesaros (Smithereens)
dude on Elvis Costello's first album (from Clover, became The News?)
