Updade on the Haggard P

Ive just had a really really bad couple of months and the past couple of days have been exceptionally bad all things considered. I made this thread as an update on the situation and maybe get a few well wishes on the situation working out and this bass being saved instead of ending up in a pawn shop or whatever. And instead Im getting all this crap? I never would have expected it from this site... I was certainly wrong there.... I have no ties to that man. I gave my condolences, the step son was the one that re-initiated the deal. I suppose I should have said 'oh no dude, I need to mourn your step fathers death -- a man I never knew for a good year or so before I could ever consider getting his bass, even though i was the one he wanted it to go to after he died'. There will that make all you holier then thous feel better about it? No freakin way I would believe any of those that have preached to me would follow what they are trying to shove down my throat if situations were reversed... no way... whatever... how it works out will be no ones business as i said before. Pardon me for bringing the whole mess up:mad:

Not trying to be confrontational. I hope you do get the bass. Just saying it seems like the family needs to figure some things out first. Just be patient. If the stepson offered it t you, but their is still a controversy, it sounds like maybe he spoke too soon. As I said before, make an offer on the real value of the bass and be patient. They might be willing to consider it if the offer is good.

I wouldn't sell a 77 P to anyone for $200. You can barely buy the tuners for that on Ebay. They know it's worth more than that which is probably why they don't want to sell.

Best of luck in getting it. It looks super cool.

What a load of crap. I was told this bass would be mine. Since when are we splitting hairs on it? And as for making a legitmate offer on what its worth? ROFLMAO You wouldnt and you know it. When the $200 price was thrown your way you'd smile and fork it over in a heartbeat and not say a word about its true value and dont try to tell me otherwise. There is NO one on this board that would stop a deal like that. NO ONE. Ive read too many threads about people getting deals like this and then some and never say a word. Man just stop while youre ahead.

The person who told you $200 doesn't own the bass anymore...;)

The family is only interested in who can get it to pawn it for drugs and nothing more. I am dead serious about this. The step son wants the bass to go to someone who will appreciate it as much as his step father did. The father was the only owner of that bass and I have been the only person hes ever offered it to (even if he did back out at the last minute) Ive been the only person he felt would truly appreciate that bass. The $200 isnt even an issue here. The stepson would give the thing to me if he had his way about it. This whole thing wouldnt even be like this if he could have gotten to the house quick enough to get the axe for me. This situation WAS worked out between he and his stepfather before he died. Even his step father didnt want the bass to end up in the family cause even he knew what would happen to it. The one person in the family that was the one most likely to grab it and pawn it is out of the picture totally so it surprised my friend a bit when the rest started fighting over it. He honestly thought someone would just take it and pawn it straight away. The whole thing is a mess. Members of the family are aware of the arrangements but others are upset cause they wont be able to get their drug money from pawning it. They apparently think they will get more then 200 for it for the drugs.. thing is in where I live pawn shops are cruel and cheap. 200 is all I have on me, its what he asked, its the best they will get, this I know. No one cares what it is. All they care about it what they can pawn it for... gah this whole mess is so complicated and I never EVER thought ID be getting this crap here of all places about it. Sure taught me a lesson on what this place is really about....

I hope the O.P. is a teenager, because I just can't imagine a rational adult acting this way. Sorry if that sounds harsh... but honestly...

If the O.P. is that concerned about the bass, then she ought to make a reasonable offer on it. Even a pawn shop is going to cough more than $200 for a 70's Precision. If you want it, make it known to the family that you are willing to pay "fair market value" for it, which will most likely be a bit higher than a pawn shop is willing go spend.

If this indeed a refin....(doesn't look like it in the pics, but hey that's just a pic on the interweb) , you're looking at an $800 bass. If not , probalby a solid $1200+

Talk to your friend , and tell them you'll offer $100 more than what the pawn shop offers.

Problem solved...

No one owns that bass anymore. The stepson (myfriend) has the most legitimate claim to it in all actuality because he was the one who took care of his step dad in his last year of life while the rest of the people bickering over it now ignored him....

There are laws to determine who gets personal possesions (they vary state to state) after someones death. Usually this is hashed out in Probate court. The bass does have a rightful owner, and will be decided by the laws of your state, and/or by the departeds Last Will and Testement.

No you dont. Look I dont know whats crawled up your butt in this but let me clarify something. I am not going over there talking to them. I havent even been by the place since the day I talked to the man a year ago What am I suppose to do, wear a mourning dress and cry every day for a year for a person I only talked to one time for all of 2 minutes if that? WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS CRAP TO ME, MAN? The stepson came to ME the other day about it and HE was the one that brought up the deal for the bass. HOW THE HELL IS THIS ME BEING HEARTLESS? WHAT IS YOUR DAMAGE? GAH... you digust me and just bought yourself a block.. enjoy harassing someone else cause you wont me anymore...

I dont need this ****....go get on your bandwagon to someone else.

Actually, yeah I DO mean that. I didn't say "I hope you get the bass" or anything like that. I simply wished you the best of luck in life. I hope you have a great life.

That's all. Nothing more, nothing less.

+1.

Unfortunately, the owner died..... and the bass may no longer be the stepson's property to even sell. If it is willed to another family member or if the stepson is not named in the will, you are SOL.

If you think a family member will sell it for dope or pawn it off... make a reasonable offer. $200 isn't reasonable.

In any case, if you did the deal with the original owner for $200 before he died, that would be cool. I would be suprised if the remaining family would be stupid enough to sell it for $200 now no matter how "white trash" they are. One quick "1977 Fender bass" internet search will show them immediately that the bass is worth $1000-2000.

Good luck.

I'd say right about here -

So Im the bad person because I spoke the truth about this family? Tell me how well you know them? Explain to me all the stuff you know they have done? Just who are /you/ anyway besides someone up on their high-horse harassing me?

There is no will. Problem #1. And the 200 came about this way; I was walking to a neighbors, the step son saw me, he came out of his house and came up to me and said 'he died, you know what that means?' I said 'Im sorry he died, yes I know. The bass.' He said 'I should be able to get it to you for less then what he was asking. What about the amp?' I said, 'I could use the amp but its not a big thing. What is the price now?' he said 'How much do you have?' I said 'All I have on me is $200.' he said 'Then its $200. Let me see if I can get it before they get there.' the man who owned the bass damn it wanted it to go to me! How does this make me a bad person? You know the other threads, one of them talked about this was how it was going to go down and gee, sane people were responding to that one and no one had a problem.

Theres a lot of sentimental significance in that bass for me straight away (because of what my first bass was and what it is) but none of you would understand it. Again, I was the only person the owner felt was worthy enough to own it. When he was alive and he balked at selling it when he saw his stepson taking it out the door to take it to me to show me, I DID offer more then he was asking and he said no he just couldnt do it. But later I found out that when he was gone I was the one that he wanted it to go to for whatever his step son worked out with me $ wise. The moneys not even an issue here. The owner and his sons (my friend) only concern was keeping it out of the paws of the rest of the family and not have it end up destroyed or in a pawnshop. He just wanted someone who could appreciate it to have it. I am the one.

Now I have sat here and had to read insults and snides and you know what? Just drop it. I am not trying to get something for nothing. Sorry but Im not made of money like the lot of you are obviously. I have a very fixed and low income. The cash I have on me now is all I have so its not an issue of offering a fair price for it. They dont even know what the fair price of it is. All they see is a quick buck for some damn drugs. The man did not want his beloved Pbass to be flipped for drug money when he went.

Im sorry none of you can understand this. Im sorry none of you seemed to have the decency to read the other threads and Im sorry the lot of you just decided to pass judgment and be ******** just for something to do. And Im sorry this is the 'closet' special Ive had before me that none of you have I guess... not my fault. And after all this I will not give any of you the satisfaction of knowing how it worked out either.

You know I do feel bad the man died. He knew he was dying. He was a one time acquaintance to me but it still sucked that he died. No one deserves to die like he did but its not my place to sit there and cry and wail and mourn for someone I only spoke with once and its not my place to say 'oh noes, I wouldnt dream of owning his bass, you go ahead and sell it for the drugs man. You need it more than I do.' W T F This is basically what al of you are saying. Or offer a better amount. What part of This. is. all. I. have. to. offer. is not getting through? And what I had is what the one who has the most right to that bass right now gladly accepted. GET OVER IT and go find your own $200 all original vintage fender P....

Thanks for your comments, Eaglemoon but its falling on deaf ears from people Im stunned even exist on this board.. thats the sad thing about internet communications. None of you are face to face with me and know the true situation here... just drop it.

The Haggard Ps future is no ones business now but mine.

Good post, Starscream. Honestly I'm a bit surprised at all the hate going on in this thread. People have been saying some pretty nasty things. And it IS easy to pass judgement on something when you aren't looking the person in the face. I know you weren't trying to get something for nothing and that the guy offered it to you for that price. You're in the clear here as far as I can see and it's more up to the step-son who has promised something that he probably shouldn't have. But like you said, apparently the man who died "did" want you to have the bass eventually. So hopefully things turn out for the best.

StarscreamG1, be aware that you may have purchased that bass from someone who had no legal right to sell it.

That bass is part of the deceased mans estate. Depending on what his LEGAL Last Will and Testament says, (EDIT: Just caught the part about no Will) or in the absence of a Will, what your state laws say, you may find yourself with a legal problem. It's HIGHLY unlikely all of his estate has been settled through probate court in TWO days.

If the "step son" isn't the legal heir to that piece of property, you may have purchased this bass in violation of some laws.

Unfortunatly, just because someone "wanted you to have it" doesn't mean diddly in a court of law.

I think people are missing the issue here. It's not the price she's paying or that the family is grieving (which is sounds like it's not). It's just that the step-son wants her to have the bass because she'll take care of it, not sell it for drugs. He didn't want to let it go while he was alive because it was something he cared about.

And no need to get so angry about the responses here. People are making comments when they obviously haven't read the old threads.

I agree with this , honestly the deceased does not car ebaout the price he would probabl rather it go to someone who cares about it , 200$ is really low but i dont think they care about the price its going to a friend. Just as long as she is not looking to sell it and profit hugely i see no big deal , maybe she will sell it someday and maybe pay it forward and sale it for the same 200$ to someone who would equally love it.

So many people on here buy and flip for profit , i would rather see her get it then some other bass player buy it off craigslist for 200$ and flip it for a profit.

While that may be true, none of that matters in a court of law (Probate Court). THAT is where this mans estate will be settled, as he had no Will apparently... according to StarscreamG1. I'd have to venture a guess that a "step-son" isn't a likely candidate to be the rightful heir to personal property. Particularly if there are close blood relatives or a spouse is involved. IMO, StartscreamG1 is attempting to purchase this bass from someone who QUITE LIKELY has NO legal authority to sell it.

I hope you get the bass.

The thing is, there's a dead man involved and whatever his written will (if there is one) says regarding property distribution will override any agreements you had. As far as the crackheads, it doesn't matter if they're lowlifes or not; the written will is legally binding.

I am not wanting this bass to flip. Oh heckno!! Now the amp? :hiding: Yea I was going to flip that even though my rig is broke down right now and Im on a borrowed practice amp but the bass? Oh **** no!!! I just think it would be so neat to have the real thing that my first bass was an illegal copy of. Full circle sort of thing. It meant a great deal to that man and would mean a great deal to me. Sure someday I would let it go and sure, I might just pay it forward you know. The fact Im the only person he ever considered letting his baby go to has to say something you know. And I think Id be the same way with that axe as well. Itd only go to the right person.

Ive played that bass. The neck on it as I said in the other thread isnt a baseball bat neck. Its a tad thicker then my T40 but not uncomfortable. Its smooth and fast and feels so sweet. The weight is perfect on it and it balances beautifully. That bass also has a vibe to it thats hard to explain. Its got the vibe of a cherished and loved instrument and call me nuts but the thought of it ending up in a pawnshop somewheres gathering dust sold for someone to get high is a slap to that axe and what its been through (its history which is discussed in one of the other threads) and to the man who had it all these years. I guess Im too sentimental for my own good sometimes.

Thats just it, there is no will. The arrangement was made verbally between the man and his stepson (my friend)... and there was no indication there would ever be a problem with it as no one in the family ever cared. The fact that a few are now bickering over it is what was not at all anticipated. The stepson is doing his best to make true the arrangement made. I honest to god dont have any more funds to try and tip this more in my favor. Shoot I had to borrow most of the money the first time just to make an attempt to get it originally when the man got cold feet and backed out. It was only by sheer luck that I happen to have the $200 on me when the stepson came to me the other day. I wasn't trying to be cheap or get something for nothing. Its really all I have. :( If its meant to be it will happen thats all I can say now. I talk to the step son tomorrow and I will know something better then. I started this thread hoping for some to wish me good luck, not get raked over the coals all day for it...

I just thought of something. You've been talking to the step-son. Wouldn't that make his mother the deceased man's widow? If so, and there's no written will, she probably gets everything. You're tight with the step-son, so I think if you talk to him he could have his mother legally sell the bass to you, and the crackheads are SOL.
