Updade on the Haggard P

Good post, Starscream. Honestly I'm a bit surprised at all the hate going on in this thread. People have been saying some pretty nasty things. And it IS easy to pass judgement on something when you aren't looking the person in the face. I know you weren't trying to get something for nothing and that the guy offered it to you for that price. You're in the clear here as far as I can see and it's more up to the step-son who has promised something that he probably shouldn't have. But like you said, apparently the man who died "did" want you to have the bass eventually. So hopefully things turn out for the best.

+1.

A lot of holier than thou nonsense going on in here. I'd defy ANYONE in the same situation to not take advantage of a deal like this. In fact, I seem to remember a thread a little while back where someone scored a vintage Fender from CL at the expense of the seller's lack of knowledge of the instrument and vintage market, and there was a lot of back slapping and well dones being thown around on there.

I say, if the guy sticks to the deal for $200, take his hand off, and I hope it goes through.

Big -1

The person who made the deal to sell this bass (step son) to the O.P. is NOT LIKELY the rightful heir to the instrument under the law. IMO, that could be viewd under the law as purchasing something that was stolen.(again, not LIKELY that the step son, a non blood relative, would be the rightfull heir with NO Will)

Would you buy stolen property... even at a good price?

The right thing to do here, is to let Probate Court decide who the rightful heir to this mans property is, and THEN make an offer to purchase it from them.

In most states it would LIKELY be the SPOUSE of the deceased that would be the heir to personal property.

That would and will be all fine and good IF the bass is actually his to sell. I wouldn't do ANYTHING involving a transfer of cash, untill that ONE simple fact (legal ownership) is determined.

Then if the O.P. gets it for $200.... smokin' deal.
